Best bands to come from england?

You have.

Saw them on that tour with the big spaceship in the late 70's and they were awesome.
I got my first records of my own when I was 7 from a school fete. I bought a pile of 11 singles for 10p to go with my £3 record player.

The Osmonds - Don't remember the track, my Dad advised me to "smash it over my knee, it will be for the best" which I didn't really understand at the time, but it was very satisfying

John Paul Young - Love Is In The Air

Olivia Newton John - Hopelessly Devoted To You

The Goombay Dance Band - Mama Coco

Craig Douglas - Oh, What A Day/Why Why Why

F.R.David - Porcelain Eyes

The Taveres - The Ghost Of Love (on GREEN vinyl!)

The Supremes - Baby Love

Kenny Rogers - Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town

Carly Simon - Coming Around Again

E.L.O - Don't Bring Me Down

They're the only ones I rememember from that pile. No wonder my musical tastes are so er... diverse.

EDIT
Holy crap, just realised I named all 11! Not bad going, and aside from the destroyed Osmonds one, I still own them all and they still play.

Cream
Led Zeppelin

Would the Hendrix Experience count? As they wouldn't have formed if Jimi hadn't come to the UK and two thirds of the band were British.. If so then The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

The Police
The Beatles

My personal favourites:

  • Boards of Canada (actually Scottish but close enough)
  • Mogwai (again, Scottish)
  • 65daysofstatic
  • Radiohead
  • Massive Attack (Bristolian no less  )
