Best bands to come from england?

Its funny how many bands people have mentioned that will clearly be long (and thankfully) forgotten as soon as the current trend in music moves on. Not that there's anything wrong with that per se, though I always assumed great bands would be the ones that could survive past musical fashion changes.

I didn't think I'd have to get to page 3 for someone to recognise Cream as one of England's best bands. Scotland will no doubt claim Jack Bruce as one of their own. A couple from the Kinks are Scots too.

I'd take the Moody Blues out of the list and substitute it with Deep Purple.

Have to disagree about taking The Moody Blues out of the list.Still going strong after 40 years shows how good they still are ;)

I used to do a lot of running (jogging) and listened to a hand held casette player. The wife has a few of the Moody Blues albums and very occasionally I would listen to them. If I really wanted a good work-out I used to listen to "Best of Cream". Justin Hayward is a very talented musician but for pounding the pavements "I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band" has got to give way to "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" (Cream) or "Fireball" (Deep Purple).

It would be interesting for someone to start a thread with "Top Ten all time singer songwriters from anywhere in the world" :)

Status Quo (incoming flames :p )

In the early 70's there was no one better and its only when they did Rocking All Over The World when they went wrong. I saw them at least 8 times during those early years and it was either them or Led Zeppelin who I saw first in 71.
Three of my band are in the Quo Army and over the last 6 years I've been to see them 3 times and I must admit they are still awesome live.
I have a large collection of Quo DVD's too -
Status Quo - Anniversary Waltz
Status Quo – Basel 2003
Status Quo – Boogie then And Now
Status Quo – End Of The Road 84
Status Quo – Just Doin It
Status Quo – Madrid 75
Status Quo – Mexico 2005
Status Quo – Ohne filter 98
Status Quo – Out In The Green 86
Status Quo – The One And Only
Status Quo – XS All Areas

Confession time. I first saw the Mighty Quo in 74 an d I've been to see them every year since then so at least thirty times. Its true that they went downbank after rockin all over the world with their albums but their live shows are awesome and I defy anybody from any type of musical background to stand in front of them and not to start rocking. I was invited to an Alton towers gig where 95% of the audience weren't there for Quo but everybody was up rocking. they are easily one of the best live acts around its just a shame that their albums since the late seventies have been awful (except Heavy Traffic). And dmp, we're going have to talk about those Quo dvd concerts because I'd love to watch them.

Skindred are from Wales though... Or at least, Benji is, and lets be honest he's the one that really matters there, what with being the best frontman in the world and all :D Still got nothing as good as Gorrit though.

Trouble with HIFH is that they can be rubbish live... Or they can be utterly stunning. I think I've only seen them truly at their best twice, but I've seen them dismal 3 or 4 times. The rest of the time they've been merely well above average ;)

haha skindred

i would normally never ever listen to skindred

however at our towns music thing i ended up stumbling into the town hall and thinking they where the greatest thing ever.... this was obviously because of the fat black guy on the stage going bonkers as when i checked out there tracks the next day i was appauled

should have never been mentioned in this thread though !

That tells you something, eh? You don't even like them and Benji still had you going. Imagine what it'd be like if you loved the music :) I agree though, not close to a "best bands from england", but a damn fine live act.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

And that's still the Wildhearts.

hehe,ye. I dont think their is a best british band? Best alt British rock Album in the last few years is the Neon Handshake by hell is for heroes though.

It's a very good album... Shame Transmit Disrupt's a total abortion really  But I'd have any of the Biffy Clyro albums over it, I think, except the new one.

What other band could come on stage and say "Right we'll see what type of fans you are, tonight we're going to play all B sides and see how many you know" and everybody knew what they were doing.
