What's the best Blu-ray player for around £250? I was going to go for the Sony UBPX800M2 but reading up on the lack of DV auto-detect just sounds like a pain in the rear.

We discussed quite a bit here if this helps...

I personally went Sony X800 for my cinema room which will be up and running this Sunday... I currently run a Panasonic DMP-UB700 which has been fantastic for the past few years as I do like Panasonic gear... doesn't help but yeah the Sony is good value and built SOOOO much better than the Panasonic, weighs a ton for what it is.

Thanks, I'm clearly blind, I missed that thread!

How much of a faff is it to switch between DV and standard HDR10? If it's quick to do, then i'm sure I could get on with it.

Lets be honest you shouldn't have to, it should just autodetect the signal and switch internally, it's a stupid thing to manually have to change something. This all comes down to budget and whether you require DV... for me, I got the 800 over the 700 simply because I want to start a high defo music collection and I didn't need the DV of the X700... as my PJ isn't DV enabled and the cost 3 years ago I won't be changing so DV isn't a requirement for me especially as its not a default format on ALL 4k's...

So for you, if you require DV then that is the main thing so it's what fits your budget really

I just ordered a UB820 from Curry's. If you can use blue light discount you'll get it for £280.

Probably the best player at this mid range level.

I'd deffo go with that... under £300 rips, you'd be foolish if you want ALL the standards this does it all apart from hi def audio which 99.9% of people are not interested in... so, yeah deffo good call. Itll be my upgrade if my current Panny goes **** up

Wish it looked nicer and wasn't 43cm wide as it won't fit in my rack. Not without it looking asymmetrical. We can't be having that:D

Just got the UB450 for £140 with the ebay 20% discount. Basic player with no LCD display or in-built apps, but supports DV and HDR10+ playback, which my TV also does. Unbeatable at that price.

Personally I would have got a next gen console.

They will receive firmware updates for years to come whereas I doubt any blu ray player will be supported in 3 years never mind 7 years time like a console.

Also a lot more resources will be out into the consoles to improve then with time.

Expensive I know but then you also get a media player and a console to boot.

I've had my Samsung K8500 for 4 years and it has been a while since any firmware updates but it doesnt suddenly stopped working because it doesnt get update. It plays all the latest 4k discs too. You only get a console for 4k discs if you need both a console and a 4k player and dont have the space or want both so it makes sense.

Dedicated player is arguably better than a 4k console.

100%, my 4k player blows my 4k console for PQ, however, if getting a console then yeah makes sense but like you say I'd never ever buya console for 4k veiwing only, as the quality isn't there. However, yes, arguably more supported, but I've been running 4k since day one and perfect in living room

I'm not sure why it would, Id have thought the processing power of a console to be in another league compared to a blu ray player (I know a console is a bit of a jack of all trades).

Because it's not dedicated, there is a notiable difference but tha's always been the case with DVD/Bluray and 4k... it's like looking at Netflix 4k and comparing to a top end disc.. it's good, but not as good lol. It's like playing a CD on an Xbox, yes it'll play, but compared to a nice Marantz Cd Player it'll be blown into the weeds.

I've been using my PS3 all this time and still do as a blu ray player, after it for early good reviews I never thought about it again.

UB820 will be my first dedicated spinner

It depends entirely on the console.

The original launch PS1 was so good at playing CDs. It was the variant with the component out cables not scart the much rarer launch version that people said that it was as good as a £10k CD player it was therefore extremely sought after and valuable as a result.

You can Google the above to verify. Pretty old news now but hopefully still be able to find it online.

I don't understand how video processing could be inferior in this day and age especially when the consoles are using AMD gpu for it. Or is it another chip and if so it won't be cheap crap but someone well known and regarded highly much like Wolfson DACs in phones.

You can get a really good DAC in a phone for peanuts so I don't see why you can't do the same in terms of video processing in a console.

I've just read that 4k blu rays have hevc streams which can be hardware decoded using the amd gpu.

It's not like Sony don't have any history in the music, blu ray and dvd market.

In fact did Sony not co-invent blu ray?

I'd like to see side by side comparisons before just assuming a dedicated player is better.

I did this last time around, my outgoing PS4 was 95% used as a media player (Netflix & Blu-ray) so was just a waste of money. I just need a decent Blu-ray player to replace it rather than a console as I'm really not a console gamer.

If you're an avid console gamer, you'd probably be using a PS5/XBox-X anyway and it'd not really be worth getting a dedicated Blu-ray player IMO (unless you're looking high end for a cinema room of course ;)).
