Best Boss Fights?

I’m replaying Borderlands 2 and there are loads of boss fights in it and some of them are great. Enjoying soloing Pyro Pete the Invincible as it’s challenging but not impossible and provides loads of great loot so it's very replayable.

It’s hard to do a good boss fight – I replayed the excellent Bioshock recently, one of my all-time favourite games but the boss fight at the end was disappointing, as are many boss fights.

I remember a few of the Bosses in Psychonauts were great, because there was a bit of complexity to them, they were interesting and challenging and there was always something unexpected, instead of the usual just adding millions of HP to a big bullet sponge.

What are the best Boss Fights you’ve seen in games and what made them so good?

Hard to name them all but the Dark Souls games have a number of good, interesting (and sometimes infuriating!) boss fights, the sense of achievement when toppling each one is what makes them great.

I'd say the monster contracts in The Witcher 3 are up there, all are unique per the mob types and can take some tries before getting used to the tactics. Jenny on the Hill was a right pain the first time I attempted that.

Another vouch for the Dark Souls series here. Some of the bosses on here are so memorable (setting, music and difficulty) that I still browse on youtube every now and again to watch some of the memorable ones.

God of war had some great boss fights, remember the keeper of time in GOW 2 was fun.

Also for nostalgia I loved the metal gear solid boss fight with liquid snake.

Not technically a boss but Kangaxx the lich and Draconis in Baldurs Gate 2 were tough.

Super Metroid

also enjoyed the final boss on Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. Took 99 deaths before I beat it, and found myself going to bed at 2am on a work night having started 'just a quick go'.

I don't like boss fights in 3d games as much as 2d ones, though Dark Souls bosses are kind of good.

Like you said - end boss fights have been generally crap for a long time; A lot of story lines are betraying this end of game bosses as weak puppets, who are controlling stronger people below them. Which doesn't make for an interesting boss fight.

The original metal gear solid with the boss where you had to change controller port on the console so he couldn't read your mind, genius.

I thought the boss fights in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice were really impressive.

Not particularly difficult once you work out the boss mechanics but visually and aurally stunning.

You didn't HAVE to do that, that was a cheat / Easter egg.

That was a good fight though yeah. The second sniper wolf fight in the snow was hard as nails. Ain't enough valium in the world for that battle.

Definitely Metal Gear Solid 1-4 (FOXHOUND, Dead Cell, Cobra Unit, Beauty & Beast Corps). Shame the "Skulls" Parasite Unit sucked in 5.

Final Fantasy 7 probably had some of the most memorable boss fights for me when I was younger. Particularly fighting Jenova-life right after Aeris dies (such sad:(), final battles with Sephiroth (of course), the WEAPONS, the Turks and too many more to list!

i think borderlands managed to pitch the right balance when it comes to bosses, they range from easy to near impossible, but the important thing is aside from the ultra-bosses (pyro pete's invincible form being one of them) any of the regular ones are at least do-able regardless of level and the difficulty stems more from how well specced/tooled your character is to that specific fight format.

ironically i think out of all the borderlands series the worst one has to be piston's airship (out of the regular bosses), at least in terms of most times i failed before succeeding.

another honourable mention to *dons flamesuit* a console series *keeps flamesuit on just in case* is the ratchet and clank series, the bosses aren't necessarily difficult but there's at least a decent level of variety to the fights (even if they are on-rails staged fights) and plenty of fun, which at the end of the day is kind of the point of games in the first place.

The final boss on Divinity: Original Sin was a good one. The Gardener in TW3 hearts of Stone & the vampire in TW3, Blood and Wine.
