Right, to summarise:

I have been laptop based for around 3 years now. I currently use a Rock XtremeCTX Pro with Geforce Go 7950 GTX & 2.0 GHz Core 2 CPU.

After moving last year, I now have a dedicated office for a computer again, so I want a desktop set up.

I looking for suggestions for the best value for money around £1000.00 exc VAT (£1175.00 inc VAT) for the computer on it's own, plus a 24" screen possibly (or smaller if that is likely to be better - suggestions please).

I have been looking at the OcUK pre built units, I used to build my own units but I cant be bothered with it now. I will likely buy a unit from OcUK with Vista pre-installed.

Which version of Vista is the best to go for? I assume I will end up with a quad core CPU.

BTW, I play COD4 mainly, but will invest in some of the future titles like Far Cry 2 etc. I really want a good value unit that I can change the graphics card on at a later date. Again I dont know when the new range of cards are going to be released, if it is soon then I dont want to throw a load of money at a high spec ard now as I will buy the new release when it is available.

Anyway, bit of a ramble, but any suggestions gratefully recieved.

have a look at the "Ultima OC 8800GTS" Intel Core 2 DUO E8400 3.00GHz @ E8800+ 3.66GHz Dual Core SILENT DDR2 System.

i'd up the memory to 4gb and go with vista 64bit home premium.

definatley no way you would consider self build ?

New graphics card are out fairly soon from what ive seen in threads around here so i'd hold off buying the system for a while.

I must admit, I have been reading posts on the forum again, and another self build could be on the cards.

From this point of view, what would people recommend parts wise?

Same budget, however, I am not interested in overclocking. I just want to use it for work and play the odd game on it. I want a good graphics card in it though, looks like I will probably buy a 22" monitor. I had a 24" monitor before but found it to be a bit on the big side for gaming myself. Also the resolution is lower on the 22" monitors, so they are easier to run.

new cards are out 17th + 19th of next month

Take a day off both of those dates. :)

Though there is a rumour that the RV770XT and the R700 will both be coming out in July with the RV770Pro coming out in June.

if you don't want to overclock i'd go for something like the wolfdale 8400, depending on the operating system you're going to use 2 or 4gb of memory.

corsair 520w would be a decent psu.

monitor wise have a look at the samsungs.

case is a matter of personal taste, but maybe something like the antec p182 or a lian li.

Can I just add. I originally had my heart set on the Antec P182 case. But then read some comments saying people didn't like it so I went on a search for another case and found the Lian Li PC171B
In my opinion they are fairly similar cases, but the Lian Li being much much better quality... and doesn't have that silly looking top fan/grill (p182)

I don't have the case yet, I plan to start building when the new mobo and gfx cards come out mid june....
