Best car for about £2000-£3000?

Focus.

You cant get a decent Civic for £3k.

I spent weeks looking for one for my son a couple of months ago, the decent ones start at 4.

Surely that depends entirely on what you define as decent?

I was very pleased with my Civic, £3100 for an 06 plate, one owner from new, 42k miles with full service history, last year. Fairly certain that was a decent deal...

Surely with a lot of the old, high mileage cars being suggested here you'd be better keeping that money for repairs on existing? Pending how uncomfortable you find the current car.

Do cars get a lot better at 3-4k? I was hoping for something tasty! (altho I won't be re-buying for a while I hope..)

As a rule (i suppose) my Dad and I always look for cars at 3K and above

Maybe if you want ‘low mileage’, but a friend of mine recently bought a 56 plate Civic in decent overall condition for about 2.3k.

Generally I want a reliable car with decent mpg and low tax.

My 2001 Focus does 40+mpg and costs about £180 a year to tax.

Worst case I'll keep the car. It owes me nothing.

Could buy a Hybrid from pre-2017 (£0 tax). But then you have the risk of a galactic bill if the hybrid system dies out of warranty.

There's always a down side. The most reliable petrol engines are the bigger ones, but they use more fuel :(

Delayed the purchase as had new rear shoes fitted. Apparently nail in rear tyre so new tyre. There's my maintenance bill this year. Lol.

That's a good deal. I recently spent ages looking for one in good condition and ended up paying £4800 for an 08 plate Type-S with 44k, FSH, one owner etc etc. Basically it is mint. One of the main dealers were also trying to sell one for £6K!

Solid car, reliable and nice to drive, though I do think it is little thirsty....

It's on a par with mine. For a 1.8l 51mpg on the motorway isn't bad. A 1.8l petrol Mondeo gives similar but half the price. My 1.4l Focus is a thirsty car as it is similar to a 1.8l.

If I want mega economy it has to be an older diesel circa 2006 for cheap tax etc.

Sure you can, I paid £3100 for my 06 ES on 64k with full Honda service history and 12 months MOT 2 years ago, I find it hard to believe that they've increased in price!!

Paid £1500 for mine and it hasn't let me down. They're not new cars anymore so they're not exactly expensive. Did have to travel for that price but still, wasn't difficult to find.

Civic 1.8, great car!

Only thing i had was a spring snap on my shock, just one of them things really.

Engine , electrics etc are so reliable.

Keep it serviced with fresh oil and it will last you ages. Mines on 113k now had it a few years and its showing no signs of ageing.

The civic also has great support so if you do get any faults there is a lot of guides / support out there, which i love,
