Best card purely for folding at the mo?

I have 4 8800GTXs, each doing 5000ppd and one GTX280 doing just under 10,000ppd

At £100-ish 2nd hand, 8800GTXs are the current sweet-spot.

Oh - and all those folks going on about the waste of electricity, then you obviously don't smoke or drink either as that's just watching your money going up in smoke or going down a toilet.

Don't smoke, drink, or fold.. If you fold for leaderboard status you have some insecurity and/or fun issues..

Extreme folding.. lol.

Ah well, then I must be the most insecure killjoy known to man. The fact is that I have a business requirement to run several very powerful PCs 24/7 in a way that only works the CPUs so installing a few graphics cards to do some good work while they're running anyway just seems like a good thing to do to me. Plus the purchase of the hardware qualifies for 100% tax relief as a charitable donation, so it looks like a win/win from where I'm standing.

I had some great times crunching SETI with 34K+ Units. Picard, Phoenix Rising, the good old days.

YorkshirePadd26 is missing the point.

an underclocked 8800gs gets 5k - got one for £30inc on MM the other day
It's all about the shadders WJA96, Core speed and memory have very little effect. More science for less watts and heat - win/win

Edit: that why I recomended the three cards I did - all three should hit around 5000ppd for only 50w an hour with some non-traditional clocking tweaks

Your doing it so you can get higher on a leader board. The fact its for the greater good just makes a good cover up story.

While i do find it quite sad people are prepared to spend their own money just to compete on leader boards on something which requires no input from them, it is helping science at least so if they wana be sad and do it then its up to them.

My PC folds, not so I can get a high score or anything, I have ogame for that if I want to play a spreadsheet.
It's something good to do, and my PC is always on anyway, I don't check my 'score' or whatever, I don't have the page bookmarked or know the url to check either. Obvious troll is obvious.

Oh and, 'cover up story', what are you, 12?

Like people have mentioned if my PC is on, why not let it do something useful. I tried it for a bit, but got bored of having to stop it when I wanted to play games etc.

Might, start back up now I have a spare PC :)

Actually a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and a 8800GTX wold churn out some points  :p

I'm doing it so I can take the heat off my main rig in the lounge and shut the dam fans up and get back to using it for what I built it for.... Games.
I'm folding for science, not (just) to get to the top of some leader board.
I'm never going to get there with the kit I have got and I'm not about to spend a fortune trying to do so. THAT would be seriously sad!

OO i dont deny it is helping science nor do i see this as a bad thing. Merly the reason for a lot of people doing it competing over leader board positions and spending a lot of moeny to do it, to me seems sad. Or as you say, "seriously sad!" And it just makes me wonder what they actually do with their lifes if their goal is to get the highest score on a leaderboard which requires them just leaving their pc on lol.

Personaly id just run it when im not using the pc, tahst helping science and costing me only a bit of extra energy. Pitty my mobo is crapping out and no longer 100% stable at any fps so it would proably just cause a lot of bsod instead lol.

Surely just spending the money on a q6600 and a crappy gpu would be more effeicent? Though gpu's are very powerful calculators i dont know how efficently they are being used.

On a side note, have they actually made any advances in knowlage? It seemed to all die down on the news.

Yes, but none of them will play games like the 8800GTX or GTX 280;)

Some kind of daft program that people run on there PCs that does calculations related to how atoms or proteins work. These can be run purely off the CPU or the advanced GPU on a graphics card.
They then upload how many calculations their Pc has done to leaderboards.
Slightly sadder than benchmark freaks, but these guys and girls should really get out more.
Proper geek stuff that has no fun involved what so ever.
A folding box would be just a dedicated computer used only for this purpose, bit like a download box but with no porn/copied dvd and no fun.
I'd imagine the people who do this, are very pale who lack social skills and may have slight compulsive disorder issues.
Propably still live at home and are cost their parents loads in electricity with there number crunchig boxes running at 24/7 non stop.
LMAO, good trolling there, found it quite amusing. :)

I actually use my old rigs that I can't be bothered to sell off for folding. For example my old desktop; [email protected]/p5k/4gb/2*8800gtx was going spare and as I've taken my server to uni with me, I set it up at home as a torrentbox/tversity server that folds as well.

Keeps my room warm for when I return every other weekend. :D
