@ YorkshirePadd26 lol great answer man i coundn't have put it better my self
Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.
Oh - and all those folks going on about the waste of electricity, then you obviously don't smoke or drink either as that's just watching your money going up in smoke or going down a toilet.
@ YorkshirePadd26
...
Don't smoke, drink, or fold.. If you fold for leaderboard status you have some insecurity and/or fun issues..
Extreme folding.. lol.
I thought the new ATI cards with their TFLOPs of computing power would be great for this. Is it down to software/driver issues?
YorkshirePadd26 is missing the point.
I have 4 8800GTXs, each doing 5000ppd and one GTX280 doing just under 10,000ppd
At £100-ish 2nd hand, 8800GTXs are the current sweet-spot.
Your doing it so you can get higher on a leader board. The fact its for the greater good just makes a good cover up story.
While i do find it quite sad people are prepared to spend their own money just to compete on leader boards on something which requires no input from them, it is helping science at least so if they wana be sad and do it then its up to them.
I'm doing it so I can take the heat off my main rig in the lounge and shut the dam fans up and get back to using it for what I built it for.... Games.
I'm folding for science, not (just) to get to the top of some leader board.
I'm never going to get there with the kit I have got and I'm not about to spend a fortune trying to do so. THAT would be seriously sad!
My PC folds, not so I can get a high score or anything, I have ogame for that if I want to play a spreadsheet.
It's something good to do, and my PC is always on anyway, I don't check my 'score' or whatever, I don't have the page bookmarked or know the url to check either. Obvious troll is obvious.
Oh and, 'cover up story', what are you, 12?
an underclocked 8800gs gets 5k - got one for £30inc on MM the other day
It's all about the shadders WJA96, Core speed and memory have very little effect. More science for less watts and heat - win/win
Edit: that why I recomended the three cards I did - all three should hit around 5000ppd for only 50w an hour with some non-traditional clocking tweaks
Yes, but none of them will play games like the 8800GTX or GTX 280![]()
LMAO, good trolling there, found it quite amusing. Some kind of daft program that people run on there PCs that does calculations related to how atoms or proteins work. These can be run purely off the CPU or the advanced GPU on a graphics card.
They then upload how many calculations their Pc has done to leaderboards.
Slightly sadder than benchmark freaks, but these guys and girls should really get out more.
Proper geek stuff that has no fun involved what so ever.
A folding box would be just a dedicated computer used only for this purpose, bit like a download box but with no porn/copied dvd and no fun.
I'd imagine the people who do this, are very pale who lack social skills and may have slight compulsive disorder issues.
Propably still live at home and are cost their parents loads in electricity with there number crunchig boxes running at 24/7 non stop.
I actually use my old rigs that I can't be bothered to sell off for folding. For example my old desktop; [email protected]/p5k/4gb/2*8800gtx was going spare and as I've taken my server to uni with me, I set it up at home as a torrentbox/tversity server that folds as well.Your doing it so you can get higher on a leader board. The fact its for the greater good just makes a good cover up story.
