Best Chat App?

Hi all,

I know there are a lot of chat/instant messaging programme's available, I have not really got in to any of them. Was wondering what you guys use and what are the benefits/disadvantages or it i.e lots of adds?

I use MSN/WLM. It has lots of rubbish in it but using A-patch you can get rid of a lot of it.

I use trillian because I have contacts on both AIM and MSN...

Yeah I've herd of these apps for using more then one chat prog, so trillian is for just AIM and MSN?

Also, have you herd of pidgin formerly gaim? I've looked it up but don't really know what it is

Trillian supports tons more like ICQ, mIRC, Yahoo..etc

And yeah I use pidgin on my little linux laptop...basically the same as trillian but for linux.

Yes I have heard of Pidgin. I sometimes use it but it doesn't have webcame support yet.

Pidgin is just a multiple instant chat protocol client. Give it a go.

Also meebo.com is a good browser IM client similar to Trillian.

Pidgin and Digsby are by far the best

digsby has a stop gap webcam support atm too

Pidgin is more mature and i use that more, but Digsby has HEAPS of potential, so i keep switching back and fourth as they update it

All my contacts are on Windows Live Messenger (msn). Its a bit clunky but Ive used iot for so long Im used to it.

For a multi platform or 'i dunnio what i want' program id use Trillian. Was good when I used it.

I *only* use MSN, but still use Pidgin and/or Digsby, because they're cleaner, nicer programs to use that MSN, MSN really is *H**.

I use mIRC - I highly recommend it or BX for linux (at least I used to use that in my linux days!)

I try other apps, but msn is actually quite good. Don't just hate it because its microsoft

msm + apatch = clean and fast (in comparison)

Digsby is one to keep an eye on.

Still undergoing development, but support for a lot of various chat programs also including facebook etc.

i never said it crashes, it's just got crap loads of ads and bloat

save this config file and load it into apatch

will save you configuring it, might also want to tick the 'remove shared folders' in one of the later screens, it's not in my config file yet

-also, once it's open, go into options, and disable MSN Today, and tick 'hide tabs' in the tabs section

Digsby takes up heaps of memory compared to Pidgin so I switched back to my favourite.

+1 for Pidgin.

Yeah because its still very immature, as i said its not perfect yet, i'd rather use it but a few things hold me back, one major problem is not group chat options yet, the memeory doesnt bother me have 4gig going spare

. Without doubt one to watch for future development though

Is more mature though i can't aruge.

Just installed apatch, bloody love it

Does anyone know of a way to make MSN show user's display pictures in the contact list as opposed to the little green figure? It's something that should be in the basic options, I'm probably just missing it :\

It's all about Pidgin and IRC. Pidgin as stated above is multi-protocol messenger, and theres an xfire plugin for linux users.
