Best choice 1156 processor

Hmm, I might go for the P2 955/965 after all!

Heh! Any of these options would make the basis of a fine machine.

One way or another, I'm sure I'll end up going with Intel, because (i) I think it'll be better for RAW file processing, and (ii) I've based most of my research around Intel. :p

Core i5 looks very ineteresting to me, I've been pricing up an AMD PII system for some time now but have held off on the back of the i5 introduction. I'm more interested in getting "bang for buck" as it called, getting a relatively cheap CPU and MB and clocking it to more expensive CPU levels. For that reason I'm liking the look of the 750, if it's competitive with the similarly priced PII it'll give me a real choice to make. From what I have read the addition of hyperthreading only has limited advantages in some apps. Although presenting twice the number of cores to the OS, it rarely achieves more than 30% performance increase and that's in app's which are optimised for multiple threads, games currently see absolutely no benefit from hyperthreading.

So between 920 and 860 what other differences are there apart from triple vs dual channel memory and lower wattage platform? The 860 is appearing on most sites as more expensive than the 920.

Then you've got to decide on what Dual Channel Memory is best to get, theres going to have to be some rush dessions made on the 8th. Personally i think ill be going with the, G.Skill RipJaw, but then you also have the Pariot sector 5 stuff coming in

I will be building a new machine for myself in early october. I do not want to buy brand new technology that has just hit the streets - I prefer something that has been around for a few months and is a known quantity. Also I don't want to buy into dead end technology that might limit future upgrades.

Specifically - I don't think I will go for the new stuff about to be released. Given that I'm definitely going intel not AMD for the processor, I am currently spoilt for choice. I am going to put off upgrading this poor old machine no longer - not even a few months.

I am currently thinking along the lines of a 920 with LGA1366. I'm assuming that LGA775 is pretty much old technology now. I just need to be sure that LGA1366 is not a dead end.

Any informed opinions anyone please? is LGA 1156 going to be the new main intel standard, eclipsing LGA1366?

My decision is not based on purely what I need for my main usage - gaming - but on what might be the "safest" choice to build a machine around in early october, with an eye to keeping it for a very long time indeed, like the current machine (see sig below). There is still a part of me that is still thinking dual cores with faster speeds to support gaming rather than 4 slower cores. I won't pay the telephone number prices for the very fast quad core processors.

I am lazy and hate reinstalling OS apps etc. Hence my motherboard will stay in my configuartion for a very long time since I only tend to change mobo after a change of OS or a disaster. Windows 2000 is starting to raise problems with lack of support from software suppliers so it is now time to change the OS (and effectively my whole PC)

Sockets 1366 is definitely not a dead end. We've yet to see the (6/8-core) Core i9 chips that are due to be released for it early next year. (This is a potential upgrade path for you, if you need it.)

The same goes for Socket 1156. This is Intel's new mainstream socket, so expect plenty of support for that for a while yet.

The 860 clocks to 3.46Ghz in turbo mode making it faster than a stock 920. The 920 clocks to 2.93Ghz in turbo mode, which makes the 860 the winner by 500mhz at stock voltages.

So if you OC to nearly 4.0GHZ is that with turbo enabled??, if not what does the clock go up to with it being OC'd and turbo enabled?
