Best cpu for just gaming

Think there's been hype and speculation already..:;)

Ah, but I get the impression that people are ignoring the fact that these 1700/1800 cpus are basically designed for heavy workloads, professional applications, etc, not primarily for gaming (least ways, thats what I reckon). Also, how can anyone compare an 8c/16t cpu with a 4c/8t cpu, they're two different animals, at least compare like for like.;)

I really can't make my mind up because of lack of information

People on here say that it's better at 1440p but never link the source of this information all I'm seeing is 1080p or 4k
well im guessing the higher the res then becomes more gpu dependent, im on 3840x1600 so think i will be fine with ryzen

RYZEN would be the better option in term of performance but honestly, I can't see the value of getting DDR4 a new motherboard and a new cpu over what you have just for gaming, right now I would just get a 2nd hand Intel k cpu, if your not satisfied with what you have

Get a second hand 4790k and a aio if you haven't got one, do a bit of overclock then sit back and enjoy your PC.
4790k with a 1080, you can't really argue that not being a good gaming pc.

The OP would have to replace his mobo as I don't believe it supports oveclocking

If want an upgrade in weeks rather than months then I suspect a 4790K will be the best price wise. Pick one up second after people have gotten the new ryzen goodies and are sellig their old gear. You won't be able to overclock but the high stock clocks will make up for it plus the extra threads help.

According to the manual your mobo supports enhanced turbo which allows all cores to boost to the max multiplier. So you'd have a 4.4Ghz chip easy.

The OP would have to replace his mobo and memory as well so the cost would rise considerably.
Sorry for some reason I thought the 4790k was compatible with his motherboard.

My mistake, I've had a look and I was incorrect, the 4790K is socket 1150, his mobo is also 1150 so it should just be a straight swap. I wonder how good the o/clocking would be though as its generally accepted that to get any meaningful overclocks you need a Z97 chipset and these boards are quite rare I believe.

4790K even at stock will eat through games.
lets face it its all about benchamarks on here.

edit: turbo mode is 4.4ghz on that cpu.

Too many ifs buts and mights.
And that, unfortunately, is the nature of the beast. You can either bite the bullet and put a Ryzen pc together thats got known issues, or wait and see what the lower tier cpus can do. Me, I would be quite prepared to wait and see what the cheaper skus can do and possibly save a fair bit of money later on.

After a quick google to check facts and see if nothings changed, keeping existing OS requires existing Win10 retail. Can deactivate win 7/8 retail license to use on new machine but not upgrade it to 10.
