Best E-mail Client for Mac OS X

I use a mix of the mail app and the gmail site. On the app I use the inbox under mailboxes, but the problem is it doesn't show the emails I have sent in the 'chain' of messages.
In the All Mail under 'Gmail' it shows all my texts, because they sync with my Gmail so I don't like seeing them there.
Plus I also label a lot of my emails and can't do that on the app.

Care to elaborate upon the professionalism that distinguishes Apples mail client from gmail? Pretty animation? Gmail's web application is by far more powerful than Mail, which let's be honest is just a simple mail client with lots of polish.

The point of fluid is not to skin gmail, though you can tweak the stylesheet, it's to separate it into it's own application window and dock icon.

A few advantages of Apple Mail off the top of my head :
* Microsoft Exchange Support
* Integrates with MobileMe
* Integrates with iCal and the OS X Address Book
* Multiple account support
* Works offline
* Google can't read all my email and send me targeted adverts
* Archiving

I'm bored now so I'll stop.

Gmail - completely agree. I've got an account to send all my spam to - don't trust Google with anything more. Good email providers are hard to find, my ISP have farmed out the email to Google as well and keep dodging my questions about Google data mining my email.

To be fair I've not had chance to try Outlook 2011 properly yet ... waiting on the Exchange server upgrade at work. Then I'll stick it head to head with Mail.

Not much love for Entourage here as it's just belligerent and fickle. Outlook 2011 can't be any worse!

So a basic email client then and you stopped because you couldn't think of any advantages. Gmail / Google apps offers a worthy alternative to Exchange used by numerous large businesses, educational establishments etc., has an address book, calendar, can download mail from other addresses, works offline and offers archiving. Don't get me started on the farce that is Mobileme.

The paranoia about ads I personally don't suffer along with most sane people. It's really not the case that gmail employees are looking through your emails, just the system is algorithmically matching keywords.

Oh boy, Gmail looks, well, like something you would get from Toys R Us. I simply hate the UI. Apple Mail works like a good email client should do, handles conversations well, it's neat and tidy, good integration with other Mac apps, reminds me of my other favourite - Outlook. I prefer to use the engine of Gmail fitted into the rather nice well appointed body shell that is Apple Mail.

I'm intrigued to know what you consider to be the killer functionality of a better than "basic" email client. If you can find me another free basic one that supports corporate Exchange that would be awesome.

OS X mail is lightweight, fast and integrates better with OS X and Apple applications than any other email client. Want to find an email? - type a keyword into the app and Spotlight will search 80k+ messages in a couple of seconds.

MobileMe? No problems with it here. It just works.

Listen, I'm not criticising Mail.app.

I offered the option to run gmail as a separate application / dock icon and was told it lacked 'professionalism'. I asked what that meant and have so far been not been offered anything with credibility apart from Microsoft exchange support, OSX integration and search (which google do rather well).

Now you're mis-quoting me - I actually said...........

whilst Mac.mail does the same job with a far greater degree of professionalism.

not lacked professionalism, simply that Mac Mail does it with a greater degree IMO.
