I have a few RMVB and DIVX I'd like top encode so I can play them on my PS3:)
Whats the best encoder to use?
Resolution of the files is 480p or lower.
I'm using Vista home prem x64 and a Q6600.

Thanks

Do you want to just re-encode them, transfer them over and then play them ? or do you want to stream them from the PC to the PS3 in real time ?.

For re-encoding there only one choice really :-

http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

And for streaming I would suggest :-

http://www.tversity.com/home

or

On top of what people are saying, bear in mind that TVeristy transcodes on the fly, and on larger screens, you can see a slight drop in quality..

To pay from the XMB, I've found the PS3Video9 as stated above is easy to use..

However, I use installed linux and VLC/MPlayer to play DIVX natively..

I'm starting to wish I'd done this.

How do you find VLC, under Linux, on the PS3?

I've been having problems with DD5.1 SPDIF passthrough on VLC on my Windows set up. Enabling SPDIF passthrough, to send to my 5.1 decoder via optical just stutters. Leaving the VLC to decode to stereo works fine.

I take it 720p/1080p and DD5.1/DTS .mkv files play back no problem too?

I'd buy a bigger HDD for the PS3, and partition it for Linux and PS3 use, but unless there's a way to transfer all content from my current PS3 HDD to a new one, to save me having to download the many GB of stuff I've already downloaded (demos/PSN games etc) I don't think I can be bothered.

Movie clips etc I've already backed up, via USB key, it's installed stuff like downloaded games I'm talking about.

Can the PC read a PS3 HDD?

If so, can it be "ghosted" to a new drive?
That would be handy!
