best ever console game... any format (and why?)

Speedball 2 on the Amiga...

Spent so many Nights as a teen trying to max all my players and win the league.. Brings back some fun memorys playing it again on the 360..

JESUS! That brings back memories of me and one of my all time best mates playing at at about the age of 3 with little joysticks all afternoon! Winner of the thread!

Shenmue
Shenmue II

Havnt done 2 yet but we have other contenders as this is really the pinnacle of the dreamcast gaming!

I suppose my suggestion is pokemon as there has never been a game that has eaten so much of my time for so many years (the day if first got my student loan in first year i rushed out to get a ds and diamond to play it with a new mate). Of course I give credit to the old 64 games I had and the mega drive ones, but pokemon had just that charm over the world... :D

prob halo 2 for multiplayer, god the hours we used to put in was insane.

for single player prob gta: sa, what a great game that was. loved every minute of it.

Final fantasy 7, reason? because it has the best story, the best characters and the best music ever created!

This.

Or MGS1

Amazing gameplay, characters and story line, not to mention the realism, at the time nothing else came close.

arg so many good games in this thread.

Speedball 2, Xenon 2 and North & South on the Amiga
Zelda Link to the Past, Mario World, Mario Kart and Super Street Fighter 2 on the SNES
MGS1, FF7 and RE on the PS1

Super Punch Out - SNES
WWF Raw - SNES
Uniracers - SNES
Metal Marines - SNES
Dino Crisis - PS1
Syphon Filter - PS1
Silent Hill - PS1
Vandal heats - PS1

Plonked in a few there that are different to what most peeps would choose. FF7 is undoubtedly my fave ever though. The games above are my other most memorable from the consoles.

Super Mario World (SNES) - Just as good now as it was then, I can replay this game over and over and it NEVER gets old, it is probably the single most perfectly designed platform game EVER.

Super Metroid (SNES) - As with Mario, a game that has withstood the tests of time, still looks great, excellent music, fantastic game in every way.

Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) - This game blew my mind when I was a kid, thought i'd almost done the game, then BAM there is an entire other world! First Zelda game I ever played and still one of my faves.

Final Fantasy 7 (PS1) - First Final Fantasy game I ever played (I was a Secret of Mana/Evermore and Zelda person), and the storyline just blew me away, it was one of those games that I HAD to keep playing, I remember starting to play, then realising it was like 2am, going to bed, waking up at like 8am, then starting to play again until I had to sleep again. Just couldn't put it down.

Mario 64 - One of the best conversions of platformer to 3D, captured the feeling of Mario perfectly, and the game felt HUGE, I remember thinking i'd never ever find all 120 stars :D

Metroid Prime - Again perfect transformation of 2D platformer to 3D, graphics at the time looked amazing (still looks good now imho), storyline was superb, music was outstanding, and it just worked so very well.

Wow, this thread is like a huge tall glass of nostalgia, I love it! :D

A few games that stand out for me are:

Shenmue
Zelda: The Ocarina of Time
Pokemon Blue, Yellow and Gold
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto
Sonic 2 (mmmaaaaaaaaannnn... Just thinking about it makes me feel five again :D).
Speed Devils

There must be more, but I'm at a loss right now.

I'd like to nominate..

Gameplay was poor, graphics were shocking, commentary consisted of 10 epic lines BUT it provided hours of classic multiplayer.

Oh and if you chose Jonah Lomu you could run through 15 men by mashing square :D

"That's a huuuuuuuuuuuge Gary Owen!"

HOW COULD I FORGET GOLDENEYE AND MARIO 64?!?!?!??

Shame on me. :( Those games were the absolute bee's knees... I wish I were seven again and games made me feel the way they did way back when..

Super Mario World.

I could play it right now and it'd be as good as I thought it would. I still play it quite often, dig the SNES out for a bash, and the only game I always end up ploughing time into is SMW.
^^^^ this.I've finished the game probably over 50 times and I never get bored of it.It's just so much fun!
The same can be said of super metroid and A link to the past.

Super Street Fighter II on SNES if only as I played it so much, that it has to be mentioned...

GT 1 on the PS1 is also close, as I played that a lot as well......

in recent years no games have really caught me as they did in the 90's. I also remember WipeOut 2097, and Tekken on the PS1.

I'd have to say the PS1 was the console I have most fond memories, followed by the SNES...
