Roy Jones has been mentioned recently, as have Leonard, Hearns, Hagler and Ali.

In your mind who was the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in history?

For my money I consider myself privileged to have been around when I could see Hearns, Hagler and Sugar Ray Leonard fighting it out. And I would have to say that my idol of them all would be Ray Leonard.

I know this is always going to be contentious (as Mike Tyson would probably have wooped Ray Leonard if they had ever met in the ring, hence the pound-for-pound proviso) but let's see what happens... :)

I'm not much of a boxing fan but I reckon Roy Keane :) or even Gengis Khann ? ;)

Na I mean't Tyson or Hagler. Though I suppose you've gotta
regard Lewis too.

I think Lewis is under-rated, if he had been around ten years ago he would probably be considered an all-time great. But you can only beat what's around at the time and he has done that.

Tyson was incredible in his early career, and was set to be the next all-time great but it didn't really happen.

Hagler, well, yeah, Hagler was ******* awesome, in the real sense of the word. But Leonard did him in style. ;)

Rocky Marciano would be one of my choices :)

But he never really had anyone much to fight, a bit like Lennox Lewis.

But let's face it, Holmes would probably have taken Marciano no problem.

Marciano v Foreman would have been an interesting fight! As would Tyson v Marciano.

nah at 49-0-0 and 43 knockouts it would still be Marciano for me, and absolute animal in the ring and a true gent outside it, most fighters that ever fought against him came out of the ring mauled by him including the Great Joe Louis :)

Regardless of how many weak opponents he had in the run up to his title (lets face it nearly all pro boxers go through phases of them) Walcott who was a real class champion was the first person to floor him in 43 fights, he took a count of 3 before getting up and then later dropping Walcott with a punch that at the time reckoned would drop any fighter in history :D

What Marvin Hagler had to say about it all ;)

Marvin Hagler

Former Middleweight Champion
In your mind, who was the greatest fighter of all-time?
"Naturally, the first thought that comes to mind would have to be Muhammad Ali. He was a tremendous athlete and he was the man for the sport. He brought the highlights, the money and everything to the sport, especially the art, the real good art of boxing. Ali is more my time. But before my time, it would have to be Joe Louis or Rocky Marciano."

incidentally a lot of the Boxers all had Ali or Joe Louis down as their first choice along with most of the Boxing critics and magazines, but when trying to compare them against each other in terms of style, power, endurance and outright aggression veyr few had Marciano lower than 1st or 2nd, in fact Larry Holmes was quite badly rated and many pointed out that against a fighter like Marciano the superb left jab he was noted for would not have been enough to stop an animal like Marciano who on at least one occasion broke boxers arms punching them that hard

Sugar Ray Leonard for me. Exceptional fighter and without equal.

Marciano would possibly be in my top 5, but not the top 3. He fought every major heavyweight at the end of their career, and Joe Louis shouldn't have even been in the ring with him, he'd been out of boxing for a while and was just looking for a pay day. Admittedly you can only beat what's put in front of you, but Marciano will suffer the same curse as Lennox Lewis, and that's being the best during a weaker spell in the division.

I'd have to say Roy Keane :p

I have never actually heard of this Marciano guy at all. Although I suppose I haven't ever really followed boxing very closely until Prince Naseem came into it :)

It's a shame he has tried to adopt an orthodox approach to his boxing don't you reckon? I believe if he would have just stayed as he was he could have been one of the very best :(
