Best flying war game?

Saitek Cyborg Evo is supposed to be good, ideally you'll want a stick that has throttle and rudder too, which I think it has both of.

IL2 1946 will indeed run under Vista as far as I know.

I'll check it out - thanks Dano.

What Joystick do you use?

Regards,

I have an X52 Pro, a set of Simped Vario Pro rudder pedals and a TrackIR all of which make flight simming an awesome experience :)

Wow, I see you take your flight sims seriously. I don't really have the funds to get similar equipment but hopfully I'll be able to get some good enjoyment with just a joystick. I'll let you know how I get on.

I have the saitek evo mentioned above and it's perfect as a budget stick for IL-2, used to waste many hours of my second year of uni shooting down my housemates over the network.

there used to be a pretty good free online (i think!) world war shooter called Warbirds, i used to love being the tail gunner in the B-17 flying fortress, that was awesome fun if the pilot was any good. heh. i loved the stuka's as well

What is the exact version for the game? Just to make sure i buy the right one! What do i need to look for?

IL2 Sturmovik: 1946

Thanks for all the useful replies guys,

I now have Sturmovik 1946, installed and starts fine. I have not played it yet as i'm waiting for a joystick (don't want to spoil the gameplay by stuggling with KB/Mouse!)

I've looked on the official forums to find out how I update it (patch wise) to the latest version, but got slightly confused. I download 4.09beta but there was no .exe - do I just copy files to game folder?

Thanks

Yes, just point the extractor to the IL2 Sturmovik directory, you'll know you've got it right when the version number shows 4.09 while IL2 loads.

There's a few tweaks you can do in the games conf.ini file to make it look better too, I'll dig out some links for you in the next day or so.

While you're waiting for your joystick it's probably well worth having a watch of the training tracks to give you a head start.

Thanks Dano, any tweaks you can give is much appriciated.
Good idea on the training vids, will start watching.
