I get 3 days off a week and usually end up getting pretty bored

What is the best free mmorpg that people know of?

-I dont want to have to be on it 24/7 to enjoy it
-Would prefer to use keys to move instead of point and click
-The more it is customisable the better
-Be able to progress through without hours upon hours of grinding

Used to play MU Online, but you had to grind for hours to be able to get anywhere

Cheers :)

Guild Wars is free in the sense there is no subscription, but you have to pay for the media.

Probably the only 'AAA' MMO with no sub.

The level cap is low and therefore so is the grind. Skill comes into play more than ubar l00t. You can pick it up from certain well known competitors for next to nothing so it's worth a try!

From my website when Nokkon was looking at getting it:

This post started off as a reply to NokkonWud, but as I went into so much detail I thought it might as well come in handy to others considering getting the game.

Guild Wars is broken down into three core games:

* Prophecies: the original game which is the closest to a traditional western RPG in theme of the three. Despite being the oldest of the campaigns it is not a deserted realm by any means.
* Factions: the second add-on which takes an oriental theme. I can’t comment much on this one as Gameplay are being slow with the package, but it is apparently the smallest of the three and PvP oriented. Again I am not sure yet but this campaign is apparently popular for Alliance Battles, a form of PvP.
* Nightfall: the third campaign, which has a African and Arabian feel. As this is the newest the guild I am in, the Godless (an offshoot of OcUK) seem to exist here the most.

Each campaign can be bought individually but if you have more than one your characters can move between them. The key difference between Guild Wars and traditional MMOs are that the level cap is a low 20, which can be reached very quickly, making it a game more about skill than grind. It also means that some people can get bored of it as there is no urge to level up as you can’t, most people migrate to the PvP side of things, which can be as frantic as an online FPS. Also outside of towns the game is instanced, both a good thing so you don’t have to queue for bosses to spawn, and a bad thing as you won’t wander into anyone else apart from you party. It is definitely entertaining, which I can prove based on that fact I am approaching 400 hours of game time, though I’d say it’s an MMO you’ll either love or hate.

There are two reasons I’d say to give it a go. Firstly there are no monthly fees which means you can pick it up and put it down at your leisure (I stopped playing in 2005, my characters still exist since I started playing again). Secondly the newest campaign, Nightfall can be picked up - in collector’s edition form no less - for a bargain £18.96 on [competitor] which is cheaper than most places do the standard editions.

Since then I've noticed you can pick up Prophecies for a tenner, and Factions and Nightfall for 12 quid.

If an MMORPG is free there's usually a pretty good reason as to why it is, just pay a monthly fee for a proper one.

but i dont want too...being the point of asking for a free one :p

i dont see the point in paying £10+ a month to have to sit there all day to get my moneys worth when i can just have a bit of fun with a free one, and move on if i dont like it

Youve never played Guild Wars have you?

Its way betetr than some of the pay to play games out there, Guild wars has just as much content, and the developers actually care about what their players want, and say, unlike other MMOs (FFXI anyone? They didnt give a toss about their players when i was on it)

If you quite liked Mu i think you'll really like Cabal. It's using the new system where you buy in game items for real cash. However if you don't pay for the game and in game items it really makes no difference, i m level 40 on there now and so far i haven't had any sort of major disadvantage to other players.

Give it a go, and if you like it, pay for it monthly (which will give you stuff like 25% extra exp, extra bags and teleports and so on)

To give you some idea of leveling, every level you get about 5 different quests, do these (and each takes about 10-20 mins) and your experience bar will go to just over half, then grind the rest, i say grind but it's not a grind at all. I played for about 4-5 hours a day for 2 days and go to level 32 just by doing quests, and if you don't like doing quests, and just enjoy killing mobs, then you'll level just as fast. (cap is 175 i think)

It's not the greatest MMo for hardcore MMO fans, but i love it, and you'll love it i reckon as you came from playing a game like Mu which i played when it first came out in beta.

Pardon my ignorance; what does AAA MMO mean? I know MMO is massively multiplay online but I've never come across the AAA.

Cabal Online is a simple game and thats what i like about it, but after lvl100 there are no more quests just high lvl party dungeons and pure grinding. The cap is 150 and does take a long time to reach.

just found another MU Online server with some awesome stats been playing for about an hour and am level 163 :p

That dungeon runner looks good, might give that a crack when i get bored of MU again
