What do you rate to be the best gfx engine ever?

Personally im torn between the Unreal Tournament engine, or Half Life Source.

Quake 2 engine was great of course.. and 3 was too.. but for me, the most impressive were UT and Source.

I dont know anything technical, maybe you guys can choose and back up your answer with reasons that prove yours is best :)

Ever? Well... Quake historically, but anything John Carmack has been involved in has been amazing.

In terms of true 3D, and non Doom style stuff. Quake engine gave us Half-Life, which gave us Source. Quake led on to Quake 2 engine, which was great, then Quake 3 engine, which was pretty amazing.

Currently, It's between Source and the Quake4/Doom3 engine. Source would be pretty damn amazing if it could handle proper lighting effects instead of crappy shadows that it has. But the one big advantage of Source is that it's so easily updated via Steam, with stuff like HDR, dual core support and all that being simply implemented, it could go on being used, as long as updated correctly, for a long long time.

The crysis engine is looking very, very impressive.
I have to say, i was impressed by Crytek, making such an awesome engine for FarCry. They did a really good job and it shows. Looking forward to Crysis and CryEngine 2.

However, Source i think has to win it, due to the exact same reasons that DaveyD has highlighted. It seems to be very well setup in that it's very mod friendly and has a lot of potential to carry on being updated to implement newer technologies.

It's a tough one but I think the Doom3 engine has yet to come of age...it took Q3 some time...and now it has 'megatexture' to give better outdoor environs, it could produce some stunning scenes...UE3 may well be the best, but we have nothing to judge it with yet...roll on 'Rainbow Six Las Vegas'

Crytek is probably the best overall at this point in time, though we only have one game to judge it by...though Far Cry looked a little vivid at times, it produced stunning, far reaching views, with what I consider to be the best water yet. It also looked good inside, so proved versitile. It also runs well on most kit.

Source is great as long as the design is good...some parts of Dark Messiah look awful...it also struggles with open enviroments, like highway17, which was very bland, with poor fogging and awful vegitation. Half Life2's city's though are unbeaten.

My vote goes to CryEngine.

I've always been a huge fan of the Unreal Engines, they seem to run well on a wide range of hardware; I remember when I first saw Unreal 2, I was stunned.

=)

Source engine, scales brilliantly and always perfect performance. And about the dodgy lighting, Episode II will have true dynamic lighting :p

A good point - at the time of release I was a huge fan of the Unreal engine, as it's glide support gave excellent performance. However, over time, the Quake3 engine has proven to be incredibly scaleable. I still have it installed on my system for benchmarking purposes after upgrades etc, since it responds well to cpu, chipset, memory changes etc.

Remedy's engine for Max Payne 2 was impressive in that it gave very good performance, looked good and also was one of the first games to sport Havok physics.

The best engine in my view is CryEngine because it gives excellent visuals both indoors and out, coupled with good performance and also supports modern tech like 64bit, SM2.0b, SM3, HDR etc, and has the innovative 'rendering mode' feature.

That said, Source looks slightly more realistic, and is the best for depicting characters. Meanwhile the Doom3 engine is arguably the best when it comes to lighting.
