FFVII is hardly an example of a good engine though. Excellent game of course but the engine as far as I know was completely proprietary and just made for that one game. It did the job pretty well I suppose but no more special than any other game.n3crius said:However Square managed the programmers for FFVII I don't know but the talent going into the various parts of this game is awesome. So many parts of the game programmed to work together in harmony.

I think the most influential engines have to be the Quake engines. The Unreal engines too although maybe slightly less so.

I'd argue that's an artistic issue rather than a technical one. Take WoW for example. Technically speaking there's nothing that special about the graphics. But artistically WoW is amazing. I don't play it but from what I've seen it looks really good even though the models and textures don't actually have that much detail.n3crius said:true but i'm not really considering how versatile the engine is. i just know that the way the effects changed the landscape and various spells took effect in realtime, how summons completely amazed me (and still do) really amazed me for its time.
