Best Game Engine Ever?

wolfenstein imho :P

paved the way for pretty much every single fps game to date :P

on a more serious note i'd say its a close tie between the Source engine and D3's engine for modern games, for most future engines CryEngine2 and Unreal 2007's engine are both looking awesome

For being so well-optimised and smooth as butter on pretty much any hardware, I nominate the Source engine. :)

Well put.. Source gets my vote as well because of how well optimised it is. It is very scalable yet still manages to look decent and run well on lower end hardware.

Saying what's the best game engine ever is like saying what's the best type of screwdriver ever. It completely depends on what you're going to use it for.

Renderware must be doing something right since so many games use it. But it seems that it isn't as fully featured as other out of the box. Maybe that's why it's so popular. It's a way to get stuff working and on to the screen quickly and easily and then developers are free to define how everything else works for themselves.

Torque seems to be the best out there on a budget. So that's great for indie and amateur developers.

In my experience Unreal Engine 2 has pretty damn good support for modding. The scripting system is so versatile you can create completely new games based on something like UT2004. The only thing that can't be done so easily is making it interface with hardware in new ways. So for example you couldn't mod in support for new graphical features like HDR. But then again I don't know if any engines allow you to do things like that in their modding interfaces.

Source is pretty up do date technically and seems to have pretty good modding support. Also got a pretty good physics engine bundled in with it. If money is no object then Source would be the one to go with for most games you could think of.

Got to give the CryEngine some kudos too. Excellent for large outdoor environments. If that's the kind of thing you're going for this could beat Source.

Back in it's day, 1993 or so... the first Doom engine was pretty staggering. Really kickstarted PC gaming. I remember playing a demo off the coverdisk of PC Zone and spending many late nights scaring myself silly and generally nuking alien butt.

Next engine to amaze me was strangely the UT2004 engine - I really like the graphics and performance of the game - I didn't have to tweak any settings. It ran like brad pitt off a shovel.

But as others have said, Source is stunning - it almost feels like intelligent system that knows exactly how to deliver the best graphics possible to your setup.

The Quake3 engine spawned a whole bunch of fantastic games - even a few years after its release. It would get my vote.

I don't think you can define the best engine ever. All the major engines and even some of the smaller ones have been revolutionary in their time in some way. All have given a lot to the gaming industry. It would be very hard to single one of them out as the very best.

If I had to pick though, the Quake engine has probably had the most influence, from the Doom 3 engine to Source and even UE3.

Havok:) Does that count?

The first game I saw it used in (havok 2 I think( was Max Payne 2. Still the most 'fun' physics in any game. The stake gun in Painkiller was great too:D

I think for now it is source, especially with the announcement that they will soon support dual (or more) cores.

For lognevity and number of games it would have to be the Quake 3 engine, many fine games were based on that.

The Cryengine should get an honourable mention, but as only one game has been based on it it is hard to judge on it's own.

When an enginge can be used to 'power' various different games then it has to be the best, so Q3 wins.

Just looking on the wiki, the unreal engine has been used in far more games than the quake3 engine.

Games using the unreal engine:

Loads of games there, pretty much all the Tom Clancy games too.

Meanwhile the quake games are listed 3/4 of the way down this page.

Not many games there worth noting except Half Life using a modified version of the engine.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how UE3 and Crytek2 work out. Should be an interesting battle between those two and source.

Quake Engines (especially 3) without a shadow.

spawned such beauties as: quake3, rctw, et, sof1+2 plus many more
