Hi

I am aiming to place my order for a new sandybridge rig and still not comfortable in my knowledge of current gpu's, my last purchase was a radeon 9800 pro 8 years ago!

I was initially planning on ordering a 6990 but that ship sailed some time ago.

i am not sure i want to order a gtx 590 as a replacement due to the cost however i am still considering spending that much.

to run a dell u3011 in its native resolution and on high settings on games what graphics card setup will work best.

would dual 6970's give me the best price to performance or would another setup be better?

For that res with max settings in games you'll need to rely on SLI/CF. Then you probably want more than 1.5GB vram per GPU.

Best bang for buck = 6950 2GB x 2 CF
A more advanced setup = 6990 + 6970 TRI-CF
Ultimate (and expensive) solution = GTX580 3GB x 3 TRI-SLI

GTX590 is a horrible choice because it already has insufficient vram in several games, and it would be a BAD idea to put a pair into SLI. (The same applies to ASUS Mars II.)

You could also wait for the upcoming 28nm cards but latest rumors suggested that neither NVIDIA nor AMD would start selling the 28nm flagships in 2011.

I'm using 2x6950s on a 3007WFP and have found them pretty damn good so far, the only time things get annoying is when a game doesn't use all the power at its disposal. Thats the games fault though, not the cards.

However before you go the Crossfire /6950 route you might want to check out this article http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-stutter-crossfire,2995-15.html

Don't rule it out, it's a great method to get higher fps, but it may not be the smoothest experience.

Having poor frame rates is a far worse prospect than the possibility of Micro stutter.

That article is ambiguous in detail & about the crashing & every platform is different & Quadfire doesn't give me crashing/blue screen or was he on about a particular game that CTD or locks up who knows, but they happen on Single GPU setups as well.

Before you can suggest an alternative route for max settings under 2560x1600 with 40nm graphics cards without SLI/CrossfireX, what else could be a better choice?

Right now 2x 580's in SLI. Personally I'd wait a few weeks though. I believe the next generation of Radeons are meant to arrive in a month or too, worth waiting to see what they bring to the table for similar money.

Sorry didn't you just mentioned micro stutter? I'm now running GTX580s in SLI (I've tried 1.5GB x 2 SLI, 3GB x 2 SLI and 3GB x 3 SLI), all had a certain level of micro stuttering. What's your point? For example Shogun 2 has been a nightmare for nvidia cards - SLI stutters more than CrossfireX in campaign map.

In terms of performance at 2560x1600, 1.5GB x 2 is far worst than 6950 2GB x 2 in some vram hungry games.

I run 2x5850's crossfired and heavily overclocked to run my dell 30" monitor native resolution I manage to play BC2 max settings with good fps but I think I'm on the edge and looking to upgrade when the 7 series come out as I doubt I will be able to play bf3 full settings. My main problem for some reason was Ram I had 4gb before and it wasn't enough but stepping up to 8gb solved all my crashing problems etc for some reason....? I'm also losing around 15% of crossfire performance from my ageing motherboard.

Forgot to say my cards are the Asus 1gb reference cards which could handle serious overclocks!! So I would have thought 2x6950's 2gbs would be fine especially with a nice overclock.

I run 2x6950 at 2560x1440 on u2711 and it manages everything so far at max apart from metro 2033 and crysis dx11 max

I won't buy nvidia ever again but I would like a little more umph in my setup

I'm going to sell one 6950 just before the 7 series come out and sell the other when they come out.

the u3011 has a few more pixels than my monitor, its either 6950 crossfire or 580 sli, imo.

I'd get a single 580 now, and switch to the 7 series when that comes out, why nvidia over AMD? There will still be people who only want nvidia when the AMD 7 series come out, but anyone who would buy an older AMD card will want that shiny new 7 series card :-)

well i run 2 x 480's sli on my 30" dell with no problems so far, i always have msi afterburner running in the background, which displays my fan speed, temps, vram usage, and fps during games, no game so far has given me any troubles, and no game that i play has used the full 1.5 gb vram,
