Best graphics card for £100

Sorry to come in at an angle here but is that Radeon 6850 significantly faster than my Radeon 4890 1GB?

I need an upgrade on my 2nd rig and don't really want to spend more than £100...

Many thanks

I just looked at the 6850 vs the 460. It was right about even. But then of course there's all that lovely headroom in the 460. Definitely the better card IMO.

Didn't realise the 460's were that cheap now. It's been a while since I looked. There isn't much in the 6850 vs 460 but the 460 is "slightly" more expensive. So it depends how tight your budget is :)

Yeah, I said more in jest than anything :p .

It depends if the OP is willing to overclock the card then. I would still go for the 6850 if not interested in overclocking.

Actually the HD6850 1GB overclocks quite well:

Even when overclocked, the worst HD6850 1GB card was still consuming less power than a GTX460 1GB at stock clockspeeds.

Looking at the Asus card(the same one which OcUK is selling for around £100),it is one of the best HD6850 1GB cards for overclocking. It uses the aftermarket DirectCU cooler as opposed to the stock cooler on the OcUK GTX460 1GB.

The Asus card also has a longer three year warranty as opposed to the shorter two year warranty on the OcUK branded card.

Anandtech got their sample from 790MHZ to 960MHZ(the HD6850 1GB at stock runs at 775MHZ for the GPU core) and the other cards were hitting around 940MHZ to 960MHZ.

TPU got the Asus upto 945MHZ:

Neoseeker got their one upto 1GHZ:

OCC got their one upto 983MHZ:

HardOCP got their one upto 945MHZ:

TPU comments that their card was limited by low CCC Ovedrive limits at launch.

So it's a toss up between the 6850 and gtx460. Think i'll do a bit of research on these two, try to find out how they perform in certain games and apps. Thanks everybody! Great response.
