best Graphics card you have ever used

think the best card i have owned is the 7950 gt,bought it bout 3 to 4 yrs ago and never a prob with it,got a 8800gtx last august from ebay, six months and bang,7950 gt saved me again as i kept it,as i online game a lot,now i have xfx 5770 :)

I agree with the voodoo cards, I personally could never afford one until the voodoo 5 5500, and I then kicked myself as the geforce256 kicked it's ass lol.

I had a geforce256 DDR in my first PC. Bought it as a prebuilt back then, it was the dogs danglies.
Prior to that I think it was a voodoo card in the family pc (well my brothers PC)

going from a ati 7000 64mb agp to a x1950pro 512mb pic-e was a rather LARGE LEAP ! :D

But now going from the x1950 to this 4850 isnt as big leap but i'm hoping going to a 5850 will be :)

went from a HIS ATI 9200SE Excalibur to a Nvdia 8600 GTS.. which was a big jump in performance. then from there to HIS ATI 4870 ICEQ Turbo, which was a pretty amazing leap.

3DFX 4MB! :D

My first dedicated graphics card. :)

Blew the PS1 I had at the time out of the water. Tomb Raider 2, Jedi Knight, X-Wing Alliance etc. all rocked my socks! :D

All that awesomeness with 4MB of Graphics RAM!!!

I loved the massive performance improvement going for my half broken 9800 pro to an 8800GTX, but it was never 100% right. After getting a GTX260 as a free replacement, I love it. Not had a single problem with it, so it'll have to go down as my best card.

Voodoo - changed the face of pc gaming for me
Radeon 9800 Pro - This card lasted me until the beginning of this year in one of the spare lan pc's
Radeon 19xx series - Another one that just keeps going, ableit settings need to be lowered
Nvidia 8800 series - Stayed in my main pc the longest after the above and still keeps going so far

between them really

Riva TNT2 Ultra - was great value for money and last me for ages
Radeon 9700 pro - if you owned one of these then no explanation is necessary
GeForce 6800 GT - see TNT2 above
GeForce 8800 GTX - my current card and still going strong

The above are the pick of the cards I've had over the years, if I had to choose just one however I would say that the 9700 pro just beats out the 8800 GTX; both are great cards however and were great value for money as they lasted well beyond the usual use by date for a graphics card.

Voodoo 2 FX (or whatever it was called) was awesome back when games were just appearing, the high ish frame rates back then were quite amazing to see.

However, I would have to go with either the 9800 Pro or the 1950, both are working to this day flawlessly.....

My 8800 GTS was good, but that's died and my current GTX280 runs far too hot and noisy for it to be considered "the best card you have ever used".

Without doubt my Voodoo1 3DFX in 1997, going from 2d to 3d accelerator card was an amazing jump, seeing Tomb Raider 1 and Quake in 3d for the 1st time was class, and even though ive had many different gpu's over the years, nothing has matched the difference in graphics since,

i also had 2 Voodoo 2's in sli in 98, playing Quake 2 and Unreal, then a Voodoo 3 in 99, and even though i bought a new PC in late 98 that came with a TNT 2 card, that used 32 bit, although not many games were 32 bit, the Voodoo cards were quicker and had a smoother gameplay,

The only other times ive been impressed to a lesser degree was with, the 1st Gerorce 256, due to the transform and lighting, the 8800gtx which was the top card for quite a while, and my GTX480 which was a bigger jump over my 260 overclocked card than i thought it would be

its got to be the voodoo 3dfx. going from 3d fps games like doom1-2 at 320x200, then it arrives for mech warrior 2? quake2 and we have twice the resolution and twice the frame rates with smooth texture filtering, bilinear woohoo :)

8800GTX, feels like i've had it forever and it's still going strong, which has allowed me to sink upgrade money into my SSD's instead :)

I've been saying "should last me another year" for the past two, and since i'm still running everything that comes out on high settings that trend looks to continue.

Oh come on guys is there know one here who used the original 3D accelerator cards back in the 90's? Does the name 3DFX Voodoo 1 ring a bell? Has there ever been a piece of technology since then that has made such a drastic change to how video games look?

I've got a Voodoo Graphics and while it was certainly an improvement on software rendering it wasn't without it's faults.... very limited choice of resolutions (512x384, 640x480, and in a very very small subset of games, 800x600), 16bit colour, only 4MB VRAM (aside from a few elite 6MB versions from the likes of Canopus), can't display 2d, no SLI capability etc.

For me the best card I've used is probably the GTX280. It's got no real weaknesses aside from lack of DX11 support as it has good clocks, good bandwidth, decent amount of SP and VRAM, supports PhysX, and I'm happy with the drivers. Mine is approaching 2 years old and it still holds it's own in most games, in fact when you look at the performance numbers it is not far off the GTX460.

In general by the time I've had a card around 20 months (if not before) I'm thinking "It's about time I upgraded this", but I'm not feeling that way about the GTX280. Currently cards which are significantly more powerful just haven't dropped to a bargain pricepoint yet, it'd take something like a 5870 <£150 to tempt me.

1900xtx was a great card and lives inside my spare PC

I loved my 7800GS AGP (7900gt with a custom board by gainward for AGP), kept my AGP rig alive for a while. Got a big resell price on that auction site because of its rarity.

I currently have a 4850 which for its price performance on purchase was amazing, still runs eveything ok at 1600x900 and is starting to feel sluggish, so debating another for Xfire or a 460GTX which is roughly the same price my 4850 was when I got it
