Best house alarm system?

Is it really worth the hassle/money to put in house alarms these days?

My experience is once a house alarm goes off no one checks, they go on for hours annoying the neighbours and the box looks naff on the house

If it's been triggered by some scrote who has run away before getting in then of course it's worth it.
Silly question.

We have, in this order;

- Good perimeter fencing\gates. First line of defense.
- Replaced all doors\windows that would represent a security weak spot.
- A German Shepard with lots of teeth.
- A Scottish Wife prone to bouts of anger.
- A Texecom Premier Elite, wired alarm. Very good.
