Best internet package?

Got Sky TV? Take a look at their phone and internet offering.

No worst idea ever!!!!!
The router is some how more crap than the standered version.
The call centre is useless, spent 4 hours yelling at them when they claimed i wasn't getting a connection to the internet with my router because my laptop apperently had a virus, even though it was running ubuntu.

We kept getting chucked from a connection at busy times during the day.

Hmmm.

Looking at BT i hear they gibe the best speeds?

not just speed, if things go **** up your talking to the guys that own the excahnge, ask anyone that works for a broadband techical support centre and you'll get similiar reply of long problem's when bt refuse to deal with the issue just claiming customer product is at fault.

edit:**** is baned?

If in cable area go with virgin.
if not go with bt, they may be more expensive. But if anything goes **** up your speaking directly to the people who own the line.

No you aren't, their ISP customer support team are just as clueless as most others. My parents were told to buy a replacement router by someone from BT Broadband because BT themselves wouldn't admit (or were too stupid to realise) there was a problem with the service itself. They're idiots, in my experience.

I've been with O2 for nearly a week now and so far it's been great. Signed up with them on the Monday before last, and they had me connected by the Friday, which impressed me. Doing some great deals through Quidco at the moment too and it's even better if you're an O2 customer (or have a family member/friend who is), as you can get a discount. With the Quidco and discounts taken into account, mine is costing me about £18 for the entire year. Absolute bargain.

yes and the usual test arent done through bt.
i.e the check synch on the line which comes back from bt with check user equipment even if the customer has setup the router into the bt phone line's master plug.

at the moment my line is tapped out at 700kb/s :D
At least my ping is good, sheeep dont seem to download much porn, it seems.

700kb/s is pretty rare for me. Looks like the sheep here have different, tastes?

Damn my rural'ness

Speaking of BT though, their service has always been pretty steady for me. No major issues apart from the STUPID excess usage charges they insist on, 1GB per month - WTF?! Only after several calls we were offered an 'unlimited' service. Daylight robbery I tell thee...

My experiences:

Orange (only had these as we had freeserve which turned into wanadoo which turned into orange) > -1million / 5. Seriously terrible internet, even worse customer service. so bad infact that i specifically switched my phone to vodafone aswell, orange will never have my custom for anything again.

Zen > 5/5. Really good internet, on 8meg, got 8meg, consistent, no traffic shaping, excellent pings, the best customer service of any company i've dealt with for any product. But theyre just too expensive so had to switch. They also have limits which is a tad annoying.

BT (at uni) > 1/5. Was on 8mb package, never got above 4 really, awful awful internet, makes online gaming nay on unplayable, customer service better than orange but still terrible.

Virgin (at uni) > 2/5. On 20meg, never got above 3meg during the day, at about 4-6am you might see it hit 9meg if you got lucky. Pings were awful, online gaming was tough. Customer service was slightly better, as they gave us £15/month off as they said they oversubscribed our line so nobody was getting the speeds they should. great...but id rather just have the 20meg i paid for thanks.

O2 > 5/5. on 20meg. never drops below 15 even at peak times, which considering my distance from exchange and im not on master socket is quite good. Pings good. Brilliant customer service and cheap.

My personal recommendation. If you have money and cant get above 2meg anyway, go for zen, if not go O2. As for combining it with call options, i dont know, at home we have our calls with talktalk cos its cheapest, but we have o2 internet, and its amazing so could try that combo.

Also with bt i havent been kicked from the internets at peak period.

You are misinformed mate, the btinternet isp are NOT the owners of the exchanges and lines etc, thats BT Wholesale and they dont provide any expediation of service faults to btinternet/openworld.

All regulated to ensure fair trading and etc.

As others have said for an all in one see if you are in a cabled area for virgin, else likely look at sky i guess.

for online gaming fibre optic cable is best (Virgin) ntl still own the infrastructure thou,
i have 3 x modems each running at 20mb. 1 is sufficient but 3 do rock when it takes less than 2 minutes to dl 700mb at 6.8 mb/sec (certain nzb allow multiple ip's). if your not in a cabled area :( oh well.

I disagree.

Solid connection which (touch wood) never drops. No capping and I always get the speed of connection I should

I've been on Max for a couple of years now. No problems at all with the standard router (old Netgear one). The one occasion I had a problem I emailed them and Tier 3 sorted it within the hour (BT screw up). Granted phone support kept telling me to click start to shut my Mac down, but hey you can't have everything... For a tenner a month it's a bargain.
