Hi guys

What's the best ISP for gaming at the moment?

I am with Pipex on their 8MB service at the moment, but am getting nowhere near that, and the upload rate is poor too.

I am after an ISP that offers an 8MB 20:1 contention With 800kbps. Price really should be under 40 pounds a month.

I am getting ping of around 35 in FPS Gaming Servers, whereas the guy nextdoor gets around 10 with his Opal Internet business 8MB service.

Above 8MB ADSL1 is not available in my area.

Thanks!

Well I can get around 3.5 actual speed, but it's varies too much.

Which is why I wanted one with a lower contention rate and faster upload as that also helps with the lag.

Any cable service suffers less with contention issues than ADSL. Personally I'm very happy with my Virgin Media service; currently on 4Mb (which I almost always get, unless I've been downloading lots at peak times) and I get very good pings in UK CoD4 servers. Also the 4Mb service from VM is being upgraded to 10Mb in the near future (for free).

could have your isssues could be the ISP but I suspect you have a worse physical connection that your neighbour.

Zen were very reliable when I had them, consitent and good pings but relatively expensive.

Aquiss are another good Enta reseller and they have a special gaming tariff with supposedly better pings!

Dont know anyone who had that package but my mate had a regular Aquiss package and recomended them :)

would i be correct in saying that virgin media would be the best for gaming, since their 'fibre-optic' cables gives the best possible performace as far as downlaod speeds and latency go?.... and the 'physical download speed' of your connection isnt really a big factor as far as online gaming goes (unless downlaoding mods n maps) its really all about how fast you can throw those packets and catch em again :D

When I was with Zen, pings were average at best given that each connection to the game server would have to go through their network in Manchester before coming back to London/Europe, which is where you'll find the majority of servers.

No you wouldn't, it's routing and peering that make the difference.

That's some bump! I don't think anyone would mind you creating a new thread on this :D

I have had a variety of ADSL providers (I'm in Belfast) in the past years and the best I could get ping wise to my favorite CSS server was around 45-50ms, which was fine for me most of the time. All of them offered woeful download speed and often ping times would sky rocket making gaming nearly impossible. Thankfully I am on BT Infinity (only option 1) and now I get a rock solid 25ms ping in CSS and 20-30ms in the BF3 servers I play on, which is often better than the England based guys I play with/against

I would never go ADSL again myself, and BT have been great (the Hub is rubbish though and I'm on my 2nd one so far...)

Tough question. Something without any traffic shaping is a must. I would say fastpath Be* (if they ever fix the routing issues).
