Best man speech, hints and tips?

Can you draw?
When i was best man i got another firend (an usher) to do some A2 size caricatures of the groom at various points in his life (doing daft things), which i presented on an easel with a pointy stick, then just ad-libbed his life story. It raised plenty of laughs.
I had people coming up to me, shaking my hand and said it was the best best man's speech they'd ever seen.
Just an idea, the pics help pad out the speech and take some of the focus off you, especially if you're nervous.

" The bride looks amazing,..one in a million, where as the groom looks stunned, and won in a raffle".

I got a laugh from that when i was best man.

I am getting married a week Saturday and am trying to do my Groom speech:(

glad i stumbled across this!

Me and another mate are joint best men for a third friend a week saturday. hes the first in our circle of friends to tie the knot. needless to say we havent got a clue what we are gonna say yet! will be keeping a close eye on this thread for tips!

I find when you get the ball rolling in a speech, its actually very easy because your talking about things you know very well.

I find writing out a speech doesn't work for me, so I learn the key points and just wing it :)

good the best response from

"and another duty of mine today as beast man was to ensure no ex girlfriends turned up. Thankfully that was taken care of for me by the foot and mouth outbreak a few years back"

Wasnt sure about using that one thought it may have been a bit much but got the best reponse.

Be personal.

I've been to 50+ weddings and the amount of repetition with jokes is ridiculous. He's picked you as his best man because you know him best. Use that rather than the same old copy and pasted jokes from the internet.

Speak - slowly.

At the end of every sentence, count to three in your head.

Speak SLOWELY.

Don't speed up.

The speech should be more than 4 minutes!

Did I mention --talk slowely?

When I was best man talking about his background, everyone seemed to love

"Ladies & Gentlemen, (Groom's name) was born a small child, who couldn't speak"

My speech was ace, people requested print out copies.

Keep it personal, a few general jokes to get things rolling is ok but you are there to talk about the groom.

Used at my brothers wedding by me!

I still recall the day he was born.....**** was a small baby.....in fact I think he came prematurely......but he has assured me that won't be happening on the honeymoon

Boom..tish

Classic but probably overused line...

x and y are looking forward to their honeymoon next week, the locations secret but the rumour is x is going to Bangor for a week.
