Best martial arts to learn?

kickboxing / maybe krav ... You really want an offensive martial art, rather than a defensive one, kickboxing should teach you how to respond in any standard fight, whereas krav will have some useful techniques for less likely, but more deadly situations- for instance knives, guns, etc etc... i'm doing kickboxing at the moment and loving it, just simply for the fitness side of things..

There is no "best". Also, you want to learn for the wrong reasons, sounds to me you just want to be a tough guy, where as I think most people who do MA do it because they enjoy it/for fun.

Yeah, I played the self righteous POS, I went there.

best to avoid and walk away. but sometimes that is not an option.

most martial arts will help you in a street fight, although it's not like the movies ;). i am baffled by the people who claim otherwise. clearly they have not done martial arts to any serious degree and probably not gotten into many fights. the ultimate warriors were the 7 man shaolin formation. this has been used in combat in the past to devastating effect (spears, swords etc...) however not practical in todays streetfight. on top of def or offensive moves, martial arts will ensure a good physical condition and most importantly keeping calm and focused in fast moving environment. but reality of fights is you don't always win, in fact you have to learn the hard way ;)

take up boxing

and running

but first of all learn the art of not being noticed.
I go to some very rough areas in very rough pubs and never had so much of a sniff of trouble.
Learn the art of not staring or looking where you shouldn't.
If you make eye contact with somebody make sure you never make that eye contact again.

Because it illustrates that the statement is false to people who might not otherwise have grasped the point.

To state that no amount of martial arts training will prepare you is nonsense when it is blatantly obvious that a world champion boxer is very well prepared for the average street fight. So we can establish that martial arts training is actually useful - its quite easy to illustrate this too via youtube:

You don't have to be an mma fighter, for your mate to cheap shot the guy whose just punched you in the face.
Albeit some street justice, I hate it when people say ohhh they're mma, thats why I'm so impressed. Mma or not, you get hit from behind without seeing it, your going down.

Its good but a lot of the techniques wont be used IRL even if it is the military standard for Israel.

why not?

if you have to fight it should be as a last resort because you are being attacked

so , using a krav technique (say a punch to the throat) would be enough for you to strike and then run. i dont see any reason not to use it IRL if you have to

Id say mostly the problem with krav technique is they're generally lethal techniques. Hitting someone in the throat can collapse their wind pipe and lead to them suffocating.
Any MA that requires attacking with punches and kick could accidently lead to a fatal blow, so IMO the best MA is one that teaches holds, and blocks. Maybe something like Jujitsu.

If you hit someone in the throat the proper way they teach it, which is rigid hand, hit them with the hand to their throat so that your index finger and thumb are on both sides of the throat, its perfectly safe, wont crush the windpipe but will shock them into submission.

People just see "neck strike" then go and hammer someone in the adams apple as hard as they can, their victim dies, and KM gets bad press.
