Best methods to build muscle mass?

You should also do barbell lunges which are fantastic for adding definition and mass to your legs. I mix squats and lunges with calve raises and my legs have developed and grown more than any machine or exercise I used before.

While correct overall the squat is better, if your targetting your legs then leg press is very close to squats in terms of quad building.

some people have excellent legs from leg press rather than squats

there was also something on t-nation a few months ago about squats v leg press. i think there is also a good article on bodybuilding.com aswell.

Plus squats can be quite difficult to perform properly,the consequences of a poorly performed lift can be very bad for you.

In an ideal world go for squats but if in any doubt the leg press will be a good second choice IMHO
