best mp3 player

Another vote here for the Sony.

I tried a cowon but sent it back, dreadful ui and although in theory highly tweakable, it sounded nowhere near as good as the Sony that I bought afterwards.

I picked up the Sony NWZ-A828K
Holy **** the sound quality is just amazing!!! IMO sonically it blows away any current MP3 player on the market!!!!

Because other players on the market have cheep amps in them - you can hear the quallity of the sony amp when you push up the bass - not only is it huge it never drowns out the treble which remains crisp. I do think new sonys make a "dry" sound (a good thing) - they sound "right".

dumped my iPod Touch finally - went for a Zune, but had major issues connecting it, so sadly had to return it. Shame, as the player itself is brilliant, excellent sound and video quality. The software for it is complete pap though, even worse than iTunes.

Went back to an old Creative Zen Vision in the end - lost out on the screen size, but I actually love the software, going back to drag n' drop management of files is brilliant. I'm sticking with my old faithful Zen from now on, at least until I get one of their new ones! :)

I have a D2, and while I find the features and sound quality to be great, I dislike the touch screen. It makes using it with one hand (without getting fingerprints all over the screen) a real pain in the bum, and you can't use it while it's in your pocket. I think that when I get a bit of cash I will be changing it for the Sony.

Another vote for the Sony here.

I am a bit biased as I owned a A808 (the last to need Sonicstage) and recently shelled out for an A829.

They have made quite a few noticeable improvements, where the sound appears a lot more crisp and bassy, screen size is slightly larger, feels a bit lighter and is a lot thinner, and also the doubling of the capacity up to 16gb should give me enough space for a long time.

The biggest highlight is that WMP11 Playlists, as I hated Sonicstage big time, was too slow for me and took ages to create a decent playlist.
Yes, you do lose the on-the-fly playlists that you used to have, but to be really honest that has not bothered me that much, considering everything else about the Sony is really perfect, they have outdone themselves this time, as nobody can really match them on any level!

The touch (I'm an owner) shouldn't be even mentioned if you're after audio quality. If you're after a top all-round player then yes, but for audio no.

Best I've heard is the Creative Vision:M, iRivers, Cowon D2 and that Sony Nxxxxxx thingy. I recently purchased the D2 and despite being knocked sideways by the quality (as I had gotten used to inferior touch audio) the touch screen drove me nuts, as did the playlist screen so I returned it after a week or two.
