Bah, I was thinking about this whilst I was cleaning the car! 4 player power weapons on the temple was a wicked crack. Many 4am sessions on that beaver.
Funny this came up, as last night we were playing through the single player on Project64 emu over a couple of beers. Speed runs on the first mission on 00 agent, ah memories
QuakeWorld is my fave - great physics, great netcode, very fast gameplay, superb blend of skill and teamplay, and is unrivaled from a UI standpoint. The base code may be quite old, but after 11 years of refinement you won't find a more advanced FPS anywhere in terms of customisability (my cfg is over 100k in size!) and ease of use for the client.
I'm not enjoying CoD4 multiplayer that much. It's too frantic because the maps are small and overpopulated, and I like to see the person who is killing me before I'm dead and not after.
I also think TF2 is overrated. I played it non-stop for the first week then finally realised that FF is a lot more fun. Compared to FF, TF2 feels like one of those arcade gun games where you push the foot pedal and your character follows a predetermined route. There is no freedom or speed to it. But I guess its ok if you like to game with your pipe and slippers and watch clips of antiques roadshow between spawns.
Ut3 is probably my favorite FPS atm cos compared to CoD it just has so much more variety. All of the game modes in Cod basically boil down to the same thing because the maps are all so similar in style. In UT3 the maps and the gameplay changes drastically between deathmatch, vehicle CTF etc. And its actually enjoyable because unless you take a flack in the back you will get a chance to fight and dodge etc before you're nailed.
But then games like CS always struck me as incredible boring and dull so maybe I'm just an oddball.
Medal of honor:allied assault and bf1942. Ive played plenty of good mp fps since, but none seem to have hooked me like these games. I remember playing moh:aa in a server called winterton night after night, it had a lot of regular players on, so got to know quite a few people. Great times.
And yes, Joint ops was very good, played that and the expansion for a long while.
MOHAA. Everything was right about it; the maps, the engine, the hit boxes, the weapons. The lack of support, a lousy publisher trying to cash in, and cheating killed it.
