Best Need for Speed?

Just finished NFSU2 - erm, about 3 minutes ago!

Quite chuffed with myself actually... I had one star on the map that I just could not do, and even with my best car ( 350Z all carboned up and full everythings etc - 10 Stars ) I never even managed to get the finish in my sights... Must have done that 20 times at least.

Anyway, I gave up, decided to boost the Scooby WRX as far as I could but ran out of cash just shy of a load of bits for handling, but then another race came along and it turns out to be the bad guy... I let my 6 year old daughter do that race cos it was 5 big laps and she did it and had just over a minute spare... The cow.

Very nice.

I wonder if they will go for an underground 3? or does one exist?

Another vote for NFS Porsche 2000 / Unleashed here :)

It's just a shame that it doesn't work properly in XP with nvidia cards (or at least mine) - it runs but the car wheels and some other textures are very blocky. If anyone knows of a fix I'm all ears.

When I played it through again last year I used some unofficial 3.5 patch: http://www.edgefiles.com/download/d...t/www/files/nfspu/utils/NFS5-3.5.20040310.ZIP

The biggest problem I had is that the game seems to limit you to a maximum of 22(?) different screen resolutions. That may not seem to bad, but consider the fact that it will list all the 16bit modes first, and it's not so great. Plus nvidia drivers these days seem to be crammed full of all kinds of weird modes, so the 'top' mode I was able to select in the menu was 800x600x32 or something like that. Tried messing about in the registry to try and force 1600x1200 but didn't have much luck.

Thanks for the link, I will have to find my copy of the game and try it :)

Need For Speed: Porsche Challenge.

Much more towards a sim in driving style in comparison to the arcade feel of most of the games.
Each car felt and handled differently, but in logical ways, and were almost without fail fun to drive for one reason or another.

Proper damage model introduced a bit more of a challenge too, sucking up the cash and encouraging you to drive without taking too many short cuts.

My main criticisms are: the timeline game mode is too easy for the most part. Some of the later races present more of a challenge but it was quite easy to zoom way off into the distance ahead of the other racers and not worry about them.
Test driver was much more of a decent challenge though, forcing you to learn to handle the cars properly.

I agree with pretty much everything you have said; however, I don't find the 944 much fun to drive when you've just come from the 3.6l 911 turbo :)

I really think people who dismiss the NFS series for it's arcade tendancies should give Porsche a whirl. The hardcore simmers may turn their noses up of course, but for anyone else I think it strikes a very good balance:

-The cars are fun to drive, but you can't be reckless
-Damage not only affects how the car drives, but is also persistent between races and requires repairs/replacements
-You can tune the cars if you want, but it isn't essential to be competitive
-The tracks are varied, good looking, and by-and-large well designed

Incidentally, for what it's worth I think the NFS series is one of the best in gaming. The EA-bashing brigade will no doubt be chortling to themselves, but I've enjoyed every title since NFS3 and played most of them through to completion.

The original Underground for Me (no 2 was too much inbetween races for me ) and Most Wanted would be up there if it wasnt so incredibally infuriating in the sense of -

1)I have been arrested several times with gaping gaps between the cordon right in front of me with no spikes yet I cant accellerate for the few seconds it takes for them to arrest Me

2) Even when you are using identical car to last time with high "hot" value - and you are high up the Most wanted (ie 5 or 6) you knock out the 1st police car and police take too long to get anyone else there

3) even going in a straight line on a major road its too easy to loose the chase vehicle (they turn around on some occasions for no reason)

Dont think the IQ is very good myself but they got the idea right and smashing a few road blocks cheers me up imensely after a dreary day in IT Support :D
