In terms of pure deathmatch FPS, Quakeworld is still #1 for me. It's nearly 10 years old now but from a netcode standpoint it is second to none, and has an extremely mature community which is now as multicultural as you will find anywhere. I'd say probably only 5% of the people I talk with on IRC/in game are British, so I've come into contact with a whole range of different people. It's pretty cool to be in a community of around 500-1000 clanned players and 'know' more than half of them.
Technology wise it is not as bad as you might think; thanks to it being opensource, people are continually working to improve things on both the client and server side. You can constant high fps, incredibly smooth gameplay and a console/config setup which is better than ANY game I've come across. You've got IF/ELSE type scripting, elaborate aliases and macros, all kinds of topnotch teamplay scripting etc, editing from within console, top notch tournament mods, server side demo recording, 'autotrack' for spectators.... it puts the 'pro' games like CS and Q3 to shame.
Of course, it's the gameplay which is the standout feature of course. Absolutely brutal with a learning curve so steep even people who have been playing for a couple of years are regarded as newbies. Scary and humilating when you first start, but very rewarding in the long run. 4v4 QW TDM is the perfect blend of speed, tactics and aim.
