Best OS for Netbook?

Also I'm pretty sure the version you download now is still the 'pre-final' - there will be a major UI change pretty soon with the HTML5 launcher.

I have to agree with the 'a bit limited' comment - I think it'd be a perfect set-up for your average internet/word usage with occasional solitaire, but I find it a bit frustrating that it's 'so' user-friendly it makes it hard to do 'non-standard' stuff - I wonder if they are taking inspiration from Apple on that front :p

I downloaded the pre final version and installed it and that looked basically like ubuntu netbook edition to me. However, as soon as I signed up with a Jolicloud account (don't try and use facebook connect it doesn't work) it updated everything for me and I have been using the 1.0 version. 1.0 is definitely a lot better looking, one of the things about the HTML5 launcher is that it's a little slow, seems like a low framerate and a little laggy. Which is funny because the launcher is supposed to be for netbooks and my almost netbook is more powerful than a lot of them.

I think the major roadblock in me using it as a full time system is that my laptop came with Windows 7 and runs it pretty well so there's not much need for me to castrate my choice and flexibility in that way. The other thing that really confuses me a little is that most of the "apps" are shortcuts which open in browser window with no toolbars or buttons, it's like having your whole OS as a tabbed browser. Which for the most part is not particularly a problem interface wise, it just feels strange I think to myself, do I open a new tab and go there or do I go back to home and click the link.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like it's really not for me but could be very good for a certain demographic, I'm not sure which one, but I can imagine some people having a much easier time of finding sites/apps and browsing them with Jolicloud than with windows, maybe older generations and maybe younger generations.

Thanks for the input on it guys, I've downloaded it in my office now, currently I have no keys, so I might just park outside it and copy the ISO to my laptop via wifi :D

I'm using Peppermint Ice on mine (Advent 4211C/MSI Wind U100 rebadged) and it's very quick, though annoying that Chromium isn't optimised for 1024x600 so the options screen is too large to see the bottom dialogue buttons. Ended up using Opera as my browser of choice and let Ice use Chromium for the web apps. :)

Can I install Windows 7 on more than one computer, I have it for my gaming rig and want to install it on my Wind too using the same key

DockBarX > gnome-do > cairo >AWN :p
I prefer Cairo to Gnome-do because the opengl acceleration is great on a netbook - the animations are wonderfully smooth .

Haven't used DockbarX yet mind, might see what that's about

Rich - I'm giving UBNR 10.04 a go and it certainly looks more complete than jolicloud, plus I didn't realise so much needed net access, so I think I'll stick with UBNR.

Any tips/guides to what you've done to the UI and any screenshots?

Yeah no worries - screenshot from the gallery thread is here

I'm using the panel view, tweaked it here to get the size and animations I wanted (the config is pretty simple), made a custom icon here and there, created groups for my apps etc and added all the apps I wanted. Then I followed this guide

http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2009/09/21/completely-hide-gnome-panel/

To remove the top gnome bar - except I decided it would be useful to still be able to access it now and then so I have it only 3-4 seconds rather than 100seconds and have the notification area up there if I need it for apps which don't play nicely with cairo-dock.

Useful apps I have downloaded:

Parcellite - Clipboard manager
OpenOffice
Pidgin (I find it plays better with the ubuntu chat icon than Empathy the default chat app)
Gimp
Shotwell

I have a Dell Mini 1012 - factory specs and it's running Windows 7 Starter.

It loads quickly and plays video perfectly. No slow down, nothing.

Cost me £200 from a competitor.
