HI,

I'm wanting some decent speakers for my powermac. I'm highly tempted to buy the Bose Companion 5 system although not audiophile quality they did sound pretty convincing in both stereo and "surround" sound.

I've already got a nice hi fi system so not wanting to go down the seperates route, I just want something small stylish that sound as good as possible....harmon kardon sound sticks II

Thanks

Dunno how small you want but the Audio Engine A5's are fantastic and they only cost £200. Everythings built into the left speaker so you just have the two speakers.

Get an Asus D2/DX2 soundcard and some Audioengine A5's.
I have the DX and the A2's, awesome combo as it is..

Edit: Forget the soundcard, didnt realise you had a mac.

Do NOT buy the Bose system! They're shocking value for money. If you think they sound good, wait until you get home and do some serious listening between them and your hifi, and you'll weep :)

Acoustic Energy Aego Ms are nice at £80, don't know what you could get for more than that unless you got some separates, perhaps Cambridge A5 & Mordaunt-Short speakers? They sound pretty darn good together.

I have the Companion 3 set and I absolutly love them. FWIW rather than read data sheets or peoples opinions (which should be taken into some account) I went to a PC store and listened to everything on offer. The BOSE for me PERSONALLY sounded better so I got them. They are expensive though as everyone likes to point out ;)

Yes, they will sound good compared to some £30 or even £50 Logitechs with a crappy sub (I have such a set). And they do sound good in store, due to how they're 'made' to sound. Once you've heard actual good hifi you'll realise how bad (or, rather, overpriced) Bose are. I mean heaven's sake how light and flimsy are those things you have on your desk?

My friend's Companion 3 versus my other friends £250-odd of amp+speaker, there's absolutely no comparison whatsoever.

The point is if they were £75 they might be worth it, but they're £200, so you're not being sold on the sound quality. Actually if they were £75 I'd buy the Aego Ms because, well....I did! :)

I really wish I could find the well-written article on all things Bose (good and bad) but I can't :(

Beansprout you got me looking at Mordaunt-Short speakers now :-) Did you have the Mezzo 2 or the 902 in mind ?

Looking for new speakers for my computer, currently have some 8 year old 2.1 Dells speakers. I mainly listen to mp3 music, watch xvid films, stream all the Liverpool games and play CS. Would Bookshelf styled speakers make these poor audio sources sound awful?

I've heard the 902s and they're awesome :)

Any decent speaker will make bad audio sound bad due to the extra detail shown, but I can't say it's ever really bothered me.

Grrr this BOSE anti OcUK thing can get a tad annoying sometimes. The BOSE C 3 speakers were next to similar priced speakers at the time. I checked them all out and my personal opinion was that I preffered the Bose. Its just what I prefer myself. No catches no this or that was done to make bose more awsome... it just came down to what I personally liked.

The bose to me appeared clearer, not as heavy on base but I liked that I could hear it very clearly.

If you don't want to hear anti bose comments, go onto avf. They have those forums censored due to advertisers/bose dealers. Bose are crap, overpriced, low quality. Get over it. If you've bought one, you made a bad decision.

£300 can get you a nice set of speakers, I understand if you don't want a amplifier, maybe some active studio monitors?

You are one of the most arrogant p**** on these forums, get over yourself.

Most of your comments dont help users from what I have noticed here. An example being if someone asked for advice on a tv for a certain price and 9 times out of 10 you rant that its a bad choice and wave the flag of Pioneer, and all the other highly expensive hardware that most people cant afford due to whatever reason.

imo you're crap.

That's called knowledge and experience. Only a fool would think someone with more knowledge is arrogant. lol at spending £200 on a set of PC sat Bose 2.1 speakers. You've been had.

As for the Pioneer, it was just over his budget but he seems to be considering it, rather than a cheaper Panasonic. It's called options.

Nah people just don't like being told there choice was a bad one, and deflecting it as a attack.

If you mean about my Samsung bashing, I think I have reason to. At least I'm not arrogant enough and admit I was wrong to buy a junk brand.

For £300 get seperates some nice MORDAUNT SHORT AVANT 902i can be had for £90 + take your pick on an amp.
Can get an arcam alpha 9 or 10 for around £150-£200 on the bay.
Hell even my gale mini monitors still sound great, I have logitech z4's and they are complete crud for music.

Do you need a decent sound card to connect to the amp to or is on board fine ?

What do you guys think of the Mordaunt Short Alumni 2? Cost a bit more than the 902i, i think they look a bit better and they are smaller but do they sound as good ?
