Hi, im thinking of buying ipod classic 160gb
so would like to sort music before i put it all on.

would like program/command to remove all dots/dashes/underscores etc
and capitalise all first letters.

this would save me a lot of time going thro each song/album 1 by 1.

thanks

edit: if it helps all my music is on my whs

The only problem is that you can put all your music into nice folders and nice names but IPOD's use their own structure which is Tagging.

You can name the master folder: Led Zeppelin
name the Album : Led Zepplelin 4
name the track : Black Dog
but it won't go on the IPOD in that place unless you TAG the tracks correctly.

If they are not TAGGED they will end up in Artists - Album directory on the album.
That reminds me of the joke on Peep Show where Jez says "Yeah we're going to call ourselves Artist Album to bugger up all the people with IPODs".

I use a program called Tag & Rename and I'm sure that has the facility to tag tracks from the filename.
Your original problem is a naming program and I use a facility in Directory Opus but it will still mean a lot of single name editing.

thanks, i understand that ipods use there own and i find it very annoying, ive got 4gb nano and had to redo everything my own way!!
thats fine with dozen albums but when you got over 100gb of music !!

i think my main request would be program just to remove all the dots/dashes etc
once i import to itunes i will then have to redo my way.

I sort all my music with MusicBrainz Picard - it'll tag the files properly from an online database and re-arrange all your music (enable it in the options) to your own folder structure.

im not a fan of tagging it from an on line source. reason is when imported to itunes it then adds the ft artist which really annoys me! if you have "artist ft artist"
it puts it in itunes as 2 separate artists

I think MusicBrainz adds it to the title field instead. Here's an album with a featured artist tagged using MusicBrainz/Picard:

I opted to give MusicBrainz a go after reading your post last week. I must say it is the best thing I have ever used for my music! Also quite scary how many of my albums weren't tagged properly.

I too had no issues with tracks/albums that had featured artists. Well worth using, though took me a while to figure out I could manually choose which albums from the database certain tracks belonged to.

In the weeks before my iPhone was delivered at the end of 2009, I decided to tidy up and sort my ENTIRE music library so I got MP3Tag which works amazingly well and added each track and sorted the tags out manually.

I use the auto from web source initially then modify it slightly to my liking.

I make sure every track always has an album cover and make sure that all tags are filled in correctly.

I then store the tracks in my own folder structure as follows:

D:\Files\Music\Organised\<artist>\<album>\<trackno> - <trackname>.mp3

Each of my songs is tagged and renamed like that.

I then installed iTunes, opened it, went straight to preferences and DISABLED ALL the options for auto managing of music.

Once this was done, I dragged my entire sorted collection of music into the iTunes window and moved to album view. It was all perfect. Nothing out of place and just as I wanted.

All album/track/artist names showed up correctly, all with covers and they worked correctly on the iPhone.

I get to manage my own music but iTunes allows me to easily play/sort/sync it.

iTunes works the way I want it to and not the other way around!

If you ever want to alter the tag of a track, just delete the track from iTunes (this only deletes it's reference and not the file itself), find the actual file on your HDD, open it in MP3TAG, edit the tags, save it, and drag the file back to the iTunes window.

Works a Treat.

Hope this info was at least a slight bit helpful.

Thanks

Neil

Why the hell would anybody do that when Itunes does a good job of tagging?
Just right click on it, change the properties and the link actually alters the original.

Does MP3Tag embed the album artwork? I found my iTunes ignored the embedded artwork on some stuff.

Yes, in MP3 Tag under each of the text tag input boxes there is a square which you drag your album art image into, press save and it embeds it as part of the file. Works perfectly everytime for me. iTunes always seems to read it.

I do it like this as it works, I ahve had issues in the past whereby I would alter tags in iTunes Get Info dialog and they are not embedded into the file itself. iTunes sometimes just adds it to it's library file and this is not helpful when you also want to use that tag info with other applications that access those audio files.

Thanks

If you only use iTunes then fine do it through iTunes. If your media is shared across a network with different media players, then I would rather sort out the music myself or use something like MusicBrainz.

Though to be honest I am likely to tag my music before importing into a media player these days. Especially after how long it took to do just a few thousand tracks!

I don't though.
All my Itunes tagged files have gone over perfectly to my drag & drop Samsung Galaxy S and my daughters Sansa.
I use Tag & Rename all the time but in the example above if you find a couple of tracks not tagged right just do them in ITunes when you see the mistake.

Oh I see. I agree - I wouldn't bother removing individual songs from iTunes to edit them. I would probably edit them in foobar/winamp/justaboutanythingelse as I only use iTunes for syncing to my iPhone.

+1 the best I have found, you can rename from file names, and if the data is not there, there is a link to the amazon database and the information is then imported + artwork
