Best program for monitoring temps

Guys,

I have just built my first build for around 8 years. A nice little i7 4770k processor is cooled by a Corsair H60 Hydro Series cooler (2013 model).

So, I am sitting here transcoding a mkv file, and what a time difference. I did the same file on my 2011 i5 laptop, and it took almost 8 hours. With this set-up it's looking at around 1 hour. Awesome.

However, I have the 4 cores running 99-100% here. Full tilt basically. I am monitoring core temps with 2 programs at the same time.

Core Temp 1.0 RC6 : This is showing core maximum temps of 74 / 72 / 69 / 60
Real Temp 3.00 : Showing max core temps of 64 / 61 / 59 / 50

So, about a 10 degrees difference between progs.

So what is the best program to use? Not necessarily one of these two either. I just want to make sure I am accurately monitoring temps, as I may be tempted into a little OC soon.

RealTemp should be the most accurate if you have made sure the correct TJMAX is set for your CPU and its not outdate like you build as 3.70 is out and possibly newer Betas.

Excellent. Cheers. I just downloaded 3.70 and now the temps are matching up.

TJMAX, is that just the max temp the CPU can go to? It's set to 100 as default, and I figure I'd be worried if I went above that.

Excellent. Thanks.

Now on my second rip on the new machine, and Handbrake is is looking, again, at taking just over an hour to process the 30GB file down to a nice , manageable 5GB (@720p, realised there is little point in 1080p for movies from the 80's, lol).

Anyway, looks like my max temps are at 75 / 72 / 69 / 61 at 100% for just over an hour. I'll have to see how long a 1080p rip takes though, but temps look relatively stable at 72 / 70 / 67 / 60.

For comparison, min temps are 25 / 26 / 24 / 22. And usually idle at the mid - high 20's.

Thanks for the info...

I have used Freemake in the past. I quite like Handbrake though. Found some nice settings that work for me, and I can queue up a list before I go to bed, and leave it running overnight (although until now it took over-night to do one file).

You mean it would be faster still with a Nvidia GPU? Can you suggest a cheap one? I don't really do gaming on the PC, but have been thinking of giving it a go. Wouldn't want to spend hundreds of pounds though. But might be nice to try out Titanfall or something (I usually do my gaming on my Xbox, for shame).

Well you can queue in Freemake Apps, remember they update a lot so no doubt far newer than builds you tested.

Not sure if I would run out and buy a GPU for that if you have a good CPU like yours TBH.

I would need to encode a file twice, once with CPU and once with GPU and compare time.

Fair enough. I was thinking of getting a wee one anyway, just for the occasional game I might play. I did once play through F.E.A.R. on a PC before buying it for my xbox. And I don't really fancy any of the current gen consoles anyway. Not that I want to spend an equivalent amount on a GPU mind you.

But that's really a question for the GPU section rather than here in the cooling section.
