Best Retro Handheld

Brought a bunch of retro handhand devices (R36S, Anbernic RG35XX H & Miyoo Mini Plus) from AliExpress over xmas for the kids and missus and the are loving the classic games from the 8-bit and 16-bit era :)
Which is your favourite device out of the 3?

Would be the Miyoo for me, not played much of late but awesome device with Onion OS. Just a bit too small to be comfortable for me.

Not tried the R36S but a good budget machine I gather, I was disappointed with the RG35XX H personally, tried buying 2 and returned both due to hardware issues.

I'm enjoying the RG40XX H a lot, the extra half inch equates to 30% larger screen overall which I find much nicer to use while still keeping the device light and compact.

Best place to get a Retroid Pocket 5 ? directly from Go Retroid or Aliexpress ? I sold my TrimUI Smart Pro and got an itch for something else.

Yeah with ease, if you look at some of the latest ones like the RG556 and the Retroid Pocket 5 you are looking at Gamecube and Switch(Some lightweight games) Emulation. They will even run PS2 and Vita stuff with no issues. I believe there is also a version of RPCS3 for android in the works.

Are the retro handhelds powerful enough to run PS1 / N64 games?
Depends on the handheld, PS1 is fine on pretty much everything but N64 can be tricky on the lower end devices. Saturn is another difficult one but it's due to the architecture of the machine.

I've heard the N64 is always tricky, I was planning on using my PSP vita to do the emulation but I've just never got round to it

Hmm, might be worth hanging on to see how much that me be then, thanks.
The 556 is great, I've had one for quite a while - will easily do as you're after and loads more (I run PS2 upscaled, WIIU, pretty heavy android games etc). But as above, if in no rush worth waiting to see what they've changed for the 557.

I'm not sure what would be upgraded other than performance TBH, which is already pretty good. The sticks perhaps - some have reported they don't love them, but TBH I haven't every really noticed any issues, other than they sit low in their housing so can't take covers / caps easily without shortening range.

Hi, thanks. I did see some reviews and people mentioned the sticks, but I suppose you can always use a bluetooth controller with it as well. I'll have a look at the prices.

Pretty sure that Ambernic currently have a Easter Sale on so you can get the RG556 for $173.89 plus postage ($10 4PX).

Ah here it is. https://anbernic.com/collections/easter-sale

RG556 delivered for £164 is pretty good (Using code EGG5 for an extra fiver off) inc Taxes from China
I just ordered an RG 406H. Damn this thread.

I’ve had ‘a few’ devices in the past and the RG Cube was probably my favourite for the form factor. I was just always annoyed at the poor sticks and 1:1 instead if 4:3 (great for pico-8 though) display. The Sega style dpad and buttons were really nice too and battery life was great.

Currently i’ve just got a TrimUI brick but its not quite there for some of the games I really enjoy - Virtua tennis 2 on Naomi / Dreamcast and Mario kart Wii.

Anbernic shipping takes forever (over a month a couple of times!) no thanks. I paid £160 delivered with tracked shipping from Germany with Aliexpress ‘Game top store’ Yet another Android device setup ill have to go through!
I wish the damned things can be imaged instead.

How does the Brick work for N64?

How does the Brick work for N64?
I've not updated mine for a while (its on MinUI) but performance was hit and miss. Mario Kart 64 worked quite well, but needed a button to map/unmap dpad to c stick.
Killer Instinct wasnt playable but did work better on a different emulator, though you couldnt get to the emulator settings, other than in a text file.

Certainly room for improvement on the emulation side, but doubt anyone will put much time into it due to the nature of the Brick being a dpad only device.

B category on here for N64 - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1irg60f9qsZOkhp0cwOU7Cy4rJQeyusEUzTNQzhoTYTU/edit?gid=0#gid=0

I just ordered an RG40XX V to go with my H...

I like the 4" screen, performance is fine for the systems I want to play on this with some lightweight shaders.

But I don't find it that comfortable to hold, it has nice smooth edges but is just a bit too small or thin... not really sure but I can't get a decent grip of it.

Thought I'd try the vertical version and see how that goes, was £50 on Aliexpress and I should be able to return it if no better.

If it works then will look to sell on the H as got a few too many handhelds knocking about already.

I also went back to MUOS over Knulli, love the look of Knulli but it's a real battery killer so will see if that improves in future update.
