Best Retro Handheld

I recently got a RG35XXSP for Gameboy games. I like the clamshell style, although makes it a bit fat for your pocket. I had thought about getting a GBA and doing the IPS screen mod but this is much cheaper!

Got a bunch of Pokemon hacks to try out.

For some reason I've bought a RGXX40H to go with my 405M and RP5. And to replace my 35H. I prefer Linux to Android based devices it seems but wanted a bigger screen and stacked shoulder buttons. Something that is chuckable in my workbag like the 35H is and I won't be upset if it breaks (the 405M feels too nice for that!)

Ive installed MuOS and have installed the PortMaster version of Vice City which is much better than the native android one. Weirdly the 35H feels nicer to hold and slightly less cheap.

Ended up buying a Legion Go S. I was able to get it for only £250 due to the current sales and having some vouchers so it was much better value! I'll be sticking Steam OS and Emudeck onto it straight away :D

I loved my 35xxh, it just needed more power for full speed Saturn.
There are nowhere near enough high powered (native) Linux devices.

Id love to run MuOS and still have the power for Saturn, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, WiiU, Switch etc.
Most Linux only devices top out at Dreamcast.

I do have a TrimUI Brick, but it doesnt get much use compared to my Odin 2 mini.

Im curious. What is the difference between Steamdeck/Emudeck on a Steam OS device and having Emudeck on a W11 device (with steam)?
Obviously a lot of people swear by the Steamdeck and its integrated environment, and I have heard so many people dump on W11, but what is it exactly that makes Steamdeck/Steam OS environment advantageous over W11?
Thanks :)

From a lot of the reviews I looked at, generally Windows just performs worse on these handhelds due to bloat. Steam OS is made for this form factor and does a better job overall.

I spent all weekend messing about getting stuff configured. It's taken a lot more tweaking than I expected to be honest, but now I've got some of the stuff working it's going great. Still adjusting things here and there but happy with it so far

Windows also plays a lot nicer with, well Windows games and apps. PCem was always a bit (a lot) annoying on the Steam deck running in Linux. Im sure on the Legion Go S it works fine along with other Windows native programs.
Edit - I see you have gone with Steam OS instead of Windows native. Maybe a good choice if you're running Steam games and Emudeck only :)

Windows programs do run in SteamOS / Linux, but they tack a fair bit of faffing around to get running and setup controls.

Just took delivery of my GC colour RP5, looks lovely and comfy-ish.. May get a grip for it to improve the ergonomics, will give it proper test later on.

I honestly don't know why I even bought it, I have a Legion go Z1 with steam os which can do way more than this device lol, battery life is about it!

Any experience of RP5 vs Odin 2 / Odin 2 Mini? Or the RG477M which is a 4:3 screen instead of 16:9

Not sure exactly what I'll be playing yet, will probably be a mix of older stuff from gameboy era all the way up to ps2/xbox

I think due to price and compatibility I am leaning towards the RP5. In the gameboy colour it looks pretty cool too.

I haven't even used my LEGO since I got my RP5, playing god of War at 2.25x resolution on the standard performance profile, it's silent, battery lasts forever, I love it, find it pretty comfy until you either need to heavily use the triggers or both analogues, luckily neither too intensive in god of War. I've ordered the official grip to help with that though.

That being said now I'm getting so into my retro stuff that I have been tempted by an odin 2, but then think I'd rather go for a portal or pocket Evo, once you go OLED it's hard to go back...

Refurbished odin 2 max is $299 atm on odins site, think it's about £240 ish delivered which is decent.

I bit the bullet and ordered the RP5 yesterday. 4PX shipping so I presume at least a few weeks to arrive.

Been reading on how to setup in the meantime:

Think I'll go with a 256GB SD card for now, looked at 1TB but they're around £100 which is crazy. Any reason SD cards are expensive compared to hard drives?

You'll love it, emulation is epic especially when you can do things like turbo mode at the press of a hot key... Older games tended to have some tedious parts and speeding them up is a godsend, stuff like pokemon you can beat in barely anytime and don't need to worry about getting the special shoes or bike depending on what game :p

As for sd cards.. It is what it is, a tiny piece of hardware, paying for that premium to have such high capacity in a small form factor.

I personally just install what I want to play and then add what I want next, I don't know how people pick a game when you have 10,000 in a menu, my adhd brain would not be able to select one!

I’ve been toying with getting something for ages, so thought maybe I’ll just use my iPhone 16 Pro (high refresh OLED screen!) now that RetroArch runs on it. I anlso have Apple Arcade annd games on iOS too. Ordered a Gamesir X5 Lite controller to hold it. Will see what the experience is like. Not sure if the controller is more or less convenient than just carrying another handheld.

Yeah guess I'll figure it out, like the 4:3 games you can add borders etc.

Interestingly it was the original Pokémon games I wanted to play, as I never had a handheld back in the day.

After that it wouldn't hurt scrolling through thousands of games deciding what to play, or maybe it will guess I'll find out soon :p
