Best Retro Handheld

Hello new here I used to use my psp and vita for my retro needs but they both crapped out so I luckily found all these wonderful retro handhelds to choose from. My main need was portability so I chose the clamshell type. But really like the big screens on the retro pocket classic, rg4ov, rg4xxv but not sure how pocketable these are compared to the 34xxsp.

My plan is I think to keep the 34xxsp for all my retro ps1 and lower but I really want the retroid pocket mini v2 since portability is still very important to me but with the power up to switch almost.

Anbernic 34xxsp

I can’t add pictures not sure how I’m on my phone for reference

Thank you

I found the screen on the RP mini too small and the buttons to click clacky for my liking.
RP mini cant do ‘switch almost’ my Odin 2 mini couldnt either and thats about 2-3x as powerful. Basic Switch games are possible mind.

Is that the v2? Or the original? Thanks for the response. Yeah a long as it can do ps2/dreamcast/gamecube that’s good. If not the retroid pocket mini v2. What else is a good one? Within 200 range. Thanks

NP. It looks like they've updated the screen on the RP mini v2 to the same screen as the Classic. Same internals on both the mini and mini v2

$179.99 for the mini v2, which comes to $194 / £145 delivered

Flip 2 $224 / £167 inc delivery. Same chipset, 5.5" screen and a bit chunkier. But its a flip so protects it, but less ergonomic.

Just bought a rg40xxh, it will be here tomorrow morning, was told by the seller that it will play ps1 great and a lot of dreamcast and n64, is that right? im quite a noob when it comes to retro handhelds.

Should look at a few videos on the tube but like to get non reviewers opinions also..next year i may get either a steam deck to play some retro stuff on or maybe something like a retroid pocket 5,
by then i guess there will be a lot of new handhelds to choose from though.

Will be fine for those - I have the rg35xx pro which is the same processor etc

Awesome! cant wait for it to get here now, after looking at vids i see the sticks are pretty poop, but thats ok as most the games i will play dont have to be deadly accurate on the sticks.

Make sure you get yourself a couple of new microsd cards as well, as the one that comes with it isn't always good quality.

Ideally something like a 32gb for the OS and then a 128gb or 256gb for games.

Its great that thr H700 chip in the rg30/35/40 devices now paired with 1GB RAM can run Dreamcast.
My RG35XX original with its 256MB RAM certainly could not run DC properly, nor N64.

Welcome to going down the rabbit hole of emulation handhelds. I started with an RG35XX in December 2022 then got a Steam deck. Inbetween now and then i've had maybe 20 different handhelds!
Actually I started with a PSP Go and using CFW to run Gameboy advanced. It was also perfect (as expected!) for PSP and hardware emulation for PSX.

It comes with a 500 and something gb card, paid a little over the top from a seller that ive bought from before, it comes all setup with custom os as well

It was definately more work a few years ago, same with computers / OS setup in general.

I would advise you to do some configuration of your rg40xx h though. Portmaster is supported on Knulli, ROCKNIX, muOS. I would highly recommend muOS :)

I still rock my PS Vita, espeically for PSP and even some PSX stuff. Still a fantastic handheld with a killer library of software.

Bought myself an Anbernic RG35XX H (arrived yesterday) after doing some reviews of various systems around that price point. Had a spare Sandisk Ultra so flashed that with the modded stock OS and have been playing it over the last day. I wasn't prepared for how small it is, after a coupe of hours on Advance War last night my right thumb was really aching. I have pretty small hands and never really had any issues with any of the various handhelds I've used before so a bit annoyed it's affecting me on this one. Also, the DS games are pretty unplayable due to 2 screens in 1 making everything so tiny, I know I can scroll through them but it that is going to get annoying fast. Basically, I think I've convinced myself I need a bigger better more powerful one in less than 24 hours of having it. Budget is now much higher so can get one which players more modern consoles too, any suggestions?

If you want to play DS games then AYN Thor would be the logical choice

That is quite pricey, especially as the 2nd screen will only be used for 1 console. I'm happy with both screens on one just need the screen to be bigger. I guess I'm looking at paying around £100-£150.

Anbernic RG Cube maybe

However it's a trade off - the screen being a 1:1 aspect will be worse for everything designed for 4:3 (e.g. PS1, Megadrive etc) or 16:9 (e.g. PSP)
