Best screen recording software?

Hi guys, as per title I'm looking for the best screen recording software, to record PC gaming footage :)

Basically, fraps makes me drop a load of frames in game :mad: and Afterburner produces choppy videos. So, what would you recommend?

As I said, fraps really does take out performance, which is odd considering my spec. Would having 8gb of ram help?
 
its hard drive speed and CPU that really do it. it hits on performance for everyone not just you ;) its what nearly everyone uses and it works and is simple :/ gotta just deal with the performance hit. Try recording at a lower res/fps
 
oh playclaw was another one iv used. you had more options on settings but really the performance was the same and i thought lower quality to fraps.
 
I've used fraps for about 5 years and have the paid version (doesn't make much dif).

Anyway i'm sorry to say but its tough! If your fraps is lagging your game then you need to look at the following:

* Your PC isn't up to spec
* You need to drop the recording settings, i.e half size and lower the FPS!

There is nothing i've heard of that will do any better, over the years my PC has gotten better... and at the same time so have game engine's, tis the circle of life :D

Then your recording to high i.e, AA on, recording in 1920x1080 etc.... Also noob question you've gone into the panel that lets you set your own FPS recording yes? Because there is an option that allows you to chose: 30, 50, 60 or type your own FPS

Recording at 60 in 1080p. 30 looks too choppy, and half size loses detail :(
 
I've just recently purchased "Dxtory" which is simply amazing.

No FPS drop in games whilst recording & support for stuff like dual audio channels & multiple codecs made it a worthwhile purchase.

Sounds good, will definitely give this a try.

To the OP: generally fraps is the best (unless the program above proves me wrong). Recording onto another hard drive helps a lot. Fraps also tends to limit your frame rate to the rate it's recording at (default is 30), so in some games setting the FPS to 60 helps a lot.
