Best screen recording software?

MSI Afterburner videos look choppy if you play them straight from recording but put them into a editing software or Movie Maker and they are fine.

Just gave Dxtory a try and it really does record with zero lag, however the movie it makes is nasty and choppy. I've not really played with the settings though. Can it be fixed?

[Edit]
Saying that, just tried Fraps in the same game (DS3) and it records with no lag as well :p

Need a better test!

I'm using the default codec outputting to normal AVI @ 1920x1080 and get perfect footage, much smoother than FRAPS.

Try changing this setting...

I switched from Fraps to Playclaw and found it worked much better for a quadcore or above.

I haven't seen this mentioned: make sure you are using a different hard drive to save the footage on, than the one the game is installed to.

Also, be prepared to save at half frame size - it can make a big difference. You can resize the output to 1280x720 in virtualdub or some other program if you want good quality youtube videos.

Never knew about this dxtory thing. will give it a go!

just clicked buy to see what the price was, 3600...then i saw the yen sign. £30 if anyone is interested.

Just tried that Dxtory. Pretty good performance (only tested it in Minecraft so far, but Fraps used to lag a bit in that).

One other thing that affects recording performance a LOT is the FPS and where you are saving the video. Saving to an SSD can assist. Like MeMeMe said, always save video to a different drive that the one the game is running from!

fraps is fine most set it up wrong then wonder why they get bad performance :p

i record all games at highest i can and dont get any notiable fps drop .

fraps is still the best then maybe afterburner but ab can give artifacts and so on in certain games.

Try snagit also, free trial avaiable and can be set to record using a nice codec not the default ones etc.
Use it to capture webcam footage from the screen all the time.

Just wondering but does anyone have issues with fraps recording to a different hard drive? It records to my c drive fine but when i try to make it record to one of my raptors it hitches something awful.

Got fraps installed on my D: drive and save to my D: drive. My os is on a SSD card which is C:, i have no problems there. My old setup i had fraps installed on my boot hd and record to another, it worked fine for me. what version you using?

3.4.5, think thats the latest one?

Actually just noticed 3.4.6 is out, will try that.

I use fraps, does the job but file sizes can be quite hefty.

Tried Roxio too, but quite heavy and lots to sign up to. not really a fan.
