My parents are currently very happy with Nokia 635's.
Smart phone, good size screen & quite simple to use (They're not very tech savvy).

However the Moto G is a good android choice!

What about a Blackberry Q5 goes for around the same price as the Moto G these days, but has a much better camera & video recording.
