What is the best, free, software for checking a hard drive?

Mate has a Seagate Hard drive that is not booting etc. I downloaded Seagate tools onto my win 8 PC but i cant get it to run.

Any other software i can try to test the hard drive please? Ta

When he puts his pc on it says to install boot disc etc. I checked the bios but the drive does not show up! Checked boot order and its not there.

Connected it to my pc and i can extract files off of it. Is it kaput?

Something like crystaldiskinfo can give you some information. Might be the PC rather than the hard drive, as if you can pull files off then the drive must be functional on some level.

Tried connecting it to a different port?

The drive used to be part of a raid but the other drive failed a couple of months ago. Looks like this one may be going the same way?

You tried the HDD in a diff PC's or off the raid controller? Seem's off that two drives from the same raid have died in that timeframe?

Cant try the drive in a different PC. Only connected it to my laptop of which i can extract data files etc.

The other drive that was in raid with it failed the same way. Strange i know. Dont know what else to do!

I use CrystalDiskInfo and SeaTools for windows (for all drives).

You can use SeaTools DOS which you just burn onto a disk and boot from - if you can't get it to work in Win8.
