Best software to test a new hard drive?

What's the best software to test a new hard drive? What is exactly that's tested? I seem to remember reading about something that you use to scan the disc to check it's integrity, checking each sector perhaps?

I just got a new 1.5TB and want to give it the once over before I load it up with valuable data.

Have you tried going to the manufacturers website for diagnosis software? They normally test for all the areas you've specified.

I use HD tune. In act I'm error scanning a drive right now.

Ahh nice, didn't realise HD Tune had that feature. Giving it a shot now

Well I tried the HD Tune software, took 5 hours, got the all clear, added a load of data, restarted the PC and it was no longer recognised in windows :/
Restarted again and it was there...very strange.
