Best story in a video game?

Witcher trilogy, Planescape Torment, Disco Elysium, Fallout 1/2/New Vegas, Mafia, Kingdom Come, Red Dead Redemption 2, Metal Gear Solid 1/2, Deus Ex
 
Aside from the ones already mentioned, I quite liked the story in FEAR, Max Payne, and the original Deus Ex. The indie game LISA is also pretty great.
 
Spec Ops the Line had a great story once you realise it isn't a typical third person shooter...

Otherwise another vote for Mass Effect, one of the few series' that kept me up to the early hours to complete it.
 
Soma I thought was excellent and different.

Some said it was very cliche but I really enjoyed Prey too, in fact it is one of my favourite games of recent times.

Alien isolation was brilliant too.
 
Last of us, mass effect 1 - 3 (andromeda can do one), bioshock 1/2

Fear 1/2 I enjoyed a lot as well not so much 3.

Most recent deus ex games were good as well imo

Alien isolation too not just brilliant it was just the perfect alien game completely imo story to game play it got everything perfect and used the material better than any other alien game to date

Brothers a tale of 2 sons ticks some boxes i think there.
i hear all of them are good, but i can attest to the quality of the story in the tell tale walking dead series.

I agree with you here I must have sunk 40 hours in mass effect 3. I just couldn’t get on with andromeda it was really lacking something
 
The only one I can think of to add to the ones already posted is Horizon Zero Dawn. There were bits I wasn't so keen on game / mechanics wise but I really enjoyed the story.
