Best time for a GPU ?

Happy with my current build but would be looking to get a 4070TI around christmas time. Currently have a 3060ti and a 5800x3d

Just wondering would the best time to buy one be when the 5x series is about to be released, or even on the first week of the 5x release ?
I'd assume at this time that online shops will be getting rid of the 4x series for a better price ?

Thanks

Nvidia really have no reason to discount above the 4070. And IMO? they won't either. Jen did a speech about how he did not want GPU prices to return to pre mining prices. With his share holders. And they are stubbornly holding out.

That coupled with this? I searched Nvidia a couple of days back and this is what you see now.

Is all they care about now. So much so that they have pushed back the 5000 series a whole year, and won't release any until 2025. If they were going to drop prices on the 4070ti they would have done so when AMD dropped the prices on their 7900 cards. They didn't, showing that they won't IMO. You may see cuts much lower down on cards like the 4060ti but I wouldn't bet on it. Fact is they don't care any more. it's either buy or don't now.

I also would not buy one once we hit 2024, as used prices will plummet as soon as they even mention the 5000 series. So I agree with throwaway, either buy now or don't.

Edit. They have even edited and completely changed their Wikipedia page.

Shame that, I thought the prices would come down. And the fact they are going towards AI than PC gaming ain't good.

I would consider an AMD equivalent card 7900XT but they are the same price as a 4070ti.. I also sway towards NVIDIA for ray tracing and the fact I can use premium aftermarket cables.
On Overclockers and similar I see premium corsair cables for " PCIe 5 " GPUs. does this include AMD GPUS or is it Nvidia only ?

Nvidia are using a nasty 12 pin? or 10 pin? power connector. AMD are just using standard 8 pin pcie.

At this price range the 7900XT will be the best buy at around £700. It is every bit as fast as the 4070ti in raster, so unless you are hell bent on ray tracing? go with the AMD.

Nvidia are moving in another direction, and tbh? fair play. They spent 20 years trying to find another use for GPUs and it looks like they finally found it. As such they are not competing any more, and AMD aren't either. That will only happen if Intel ever get good enough to compete with AMD at a GPU level, but even if they do it will pale in significance with what Nvidia could do if gaming was still their main revenue. I just think those days are over now. The 40 series could have been 30% faster on every card they launched, so the fact they didn't and felt no need to? says it all.

Even AMD are winding down now. Their main cards now are the 7800xt and 7700xt, and next gen I am hearing rumours they will cap out at that level and not even bother with a flagship card.

Can you link them? PCIE5 usually refers to the 12/16 pin connector that only nvidia are using.

yes, this one for example. I know it isn't Corsair

After reading this thread and re-jogging my memory I can remember now that NVIDIA use a proprietary " small 12 OR 16 pin " style connector wheras AMD use standard 8pin connectors ( or in this case, 2x8 pin connectors )

Tbf everyone is probably right there will be no mega sale. Just get the fattest card you can afford and it'll likely last a tiny bit longer. I'm rocking a 2080ti my mate sourced me for about £800 years ago. Can't see me getting anything til 6 series maybe. 5800 3d first here

There is no right time to buy any technology. If you the first to have it you have to pay lots of money.

If you wait a bit and still buy the latest tech you still pay lots of money.

What you do is buy what you can afford at the time and if it’s a pants card then so be it.

I have a 660GTX still that I paid (at the time) £350 for at release date. Still going strong still playing games. Not the latest ones but I don’t play latest games like the rest of the world. I love my old school games that the gtx can handle.

Looks like I'll go with a 7800XT at the end of the year. Seems similar in performance to the 4070(non TI) but for about £500 for the sapphire ( also sold on Overclockers in October, apparently )

Also seems like I can get about £210 for my 3060TI FE when sold to my local technology exchange shop ( cant mention names on here I think )

I miss the days of Kepler - 660 Ti for £279 for the FTW2 model - maxwell as well 980 Ti was such a great card.. I do feel I’m getting old ha!

They are currently leaning heavily into AI so it depends entirely on what graphical grunt you are looking for, It's always a good time to jump in if you can achieve what you are looking for :)

Can you read? Did you see where I wrote "even more"?

So what's new then? I don't see where AMD come into it either. Nvidia do not need any excuse whatsoever to continue hiking prices beyond reason. So AMD not having any top end cards won't make any diofference and in any case 90% of people buy Nvidia blind every gen.
