I believe both Unreal1 and UT99 were equally groundbreaking titles for different reasons.. and both miles ahead of 2003/4 and UT3
I still reckon with the right support from Epic' UT would had thrived for a few more years, unfortunatly they got greedy and sent the Unreal series down the toilet, not indifferent from how EA flushed the cnc series
Its a big part of why although obviously popular (nobody would make games otherwise) pc gaming's gradually declined..
Used to be a case of when you saw a good game, you could see yourself still playing it 6/12 months down the road. Aside from mmorpg's and a couple other exeptions this simply doesn't happen anymore... the companies themselves ensure this through pulling support of the title to make sure people buy the next, even if its a pile of balls (another example would be cod4, codbo)
