Best Video codecs pack?

Yep using W7 64bit pro here. Dont need anything fancy. Infact I did also used to use the K-Lite Codec too!

Is Shark007 something more recent to CCCP/Klite?

I would have agreed with Shark007, but I really take issue with the way in which it stealthily installs the blasted Ask toolbar - having no choice to decline is bad enough, but the installer doesn't even tell you what's going to happen, unless you comb through the small print in the EULA (which is very long, and appears in a small scrollable window).

I appreciate that the developer wants to make a living, but this is just malware-type behaviour in my opinion... he has in fact published a registry fix on his forum which will prevent the Ask bar from installing (and another one for the similarly obnoxious Bing bar), but I don't suppose most people will even realise it's necessary until after the event.

i used to use those packs and then i started to just install ffdshow and ive not had any issues playing anything.

They're all still maintained and updated. Given that Shark007's pack now auto-installs the Ask toolbar (I didn't know that, been on OS X for a month) I'd say stick to K-Lite and MPC-HC.

I didn't see the Ask bar on my girlfriends laptop when I updated her Shark007 codecs just there. Bing Bar did install. Simple fix for that one. Just uninstall it afterwards. Not like it takes long.

Out of interest, where exactly are the registry fixes, can't seem to find them on his forums.

There is a tick box to select not to install any bars. I installed the latest Shark007 codecs the other day, and it's easy enough to untick a small box.

I don't understand why people feel the need to complain about having about to untick one small box in an installation. You don't need to read any text, it's at the bottom of the windows, above the next button on the installation.
There is *no* option to decline the Ask bar, unless it's been added sometime in the last few days, possibly in response to the comments here.

It's not even the lack of choice which is the main issue, it's the fact that the Ask installation doesn't clearly announce its presence.

/edit: I replied before your ninja edit, but the link to the reg fix is as above. :)

Apologies. You caught me before I edited it :p

However, after installing it on my girlfriends laptop, I didn't see the Ask bar anywhere. Bing bar has been removed, but no Ask bar.

Yes, it is annoying, but these things can be removed.

Edit: Apologies for the reply before, I thought I had unticked a box for Ask or Bing the other day, but it was actually Weather Bug. Either way, while it is annoying, at least the reg fix is there now :) Still doesn't detract from them being good codecs in my opinion :)

Oh I agree - the Shark007 pack does (or did) give the lie to the popular "all codec packs are evil, m'kay" viewpoint. That just makes it all the more disappointing that the developer has chosen this method of pursuing a revenue stream, and doesn't even seem apologetic for it.

For the most part Codec packs are redundent these days with mpc-hc and vlc supporting just about everything. ffdshow is essentialy a big collection of codecs itself so is all you need if you want everything supported in wmc or other player.

I use the cccp pack as it is essentialy just a pre configured mpc-hc and ffdshow combo. If there is a video or audio format that doesnt work, chances are it just needs setting in ffdshow or mpc prefs.

Another vote for k-lite codec pack. It installs media player classic which is good and it plays pretty much everything I throw at it.

K-lite was the best I've used (though like others it was Shark's until the search bar issues etc.). Ended up learning so much from trying out all the packs over the years that now I roll my own from basically just FFDshow. MPC-HC and a few extra splitters/codecs for specific purposes.
