Hi guys,

I understand there are a few free VPN services out there. Can anyone recommend one that is simple enough to use on a daily basis?

No free service is truly 'free', they are restricted in some way or you have to give something up.

They typically have one or all the following issues:
Ad Supported.
Speed (slow)
Heavily restrictive data limit (ie. 500mb)
They run of Peer to Peer which means other people are using your internet to brows anonymously. (Bad, ie. Hola)
Latency (slow)

If your serious about using a VPN just buy one that fits your needs, you can get full featured services from £40 a year. Tor Guard, PIA, Tunnel Bear to name a few. Just read the small print carefully as to what is and inst allowed on their network.

Many thanks for your response.

I agree as free is never really free.

I've been using tunnel bear (with 500mb cap) to try it out but what I've noticed is that my torrents don't download but I can surf just fine? Is there a reason for this?

Also what would you suggest from the paid ones? PureVPN or PIA or TunnelBear?
I download a lot so need one that isn't going to slow down my 200Mb BB connection or have any download/upload limits

I've just renewed with ExpressVPN. Excellent speeds and totally unlimited. Doesn't come cheap though - about £80 for the year.

Because you need privacy whilst downloading those Linux isos right? :D

Treat this as a warning - No talk of piracy is allowed here. Thanks - Armageus

Thanks. What up and down source do you regularly get?

I presume your talking about speeds. I get about 2-3 mbps lower than max using a UK server for downloads/uploads. They have an app that can speedtest all their servers and tell you which one is offering the fastest speeds.

What kind of latency are you guys seeing? I guess my biggest issue is finding a VPN that I can game through reliably; as I want a VPN that my router can connect directly too, rather than having VPN clients on my computers.

I don't download much at all, and AirVPN is absolutely fine for downloading things on Steam/Battlenet for example - I've had to reinstall Windows quite a few times recently so I've downloaded 100s of GBs and both Steam/Battlenet can get close to maxing out my Infinity2. But, I can't game on it, presumably because latency isn't great?

StackSocial have lifetime subs with various providers for not a lot of money, i've had them via them for PureVPN and Tiger VPN, both work well and have no complaints. As far as usage goes given the changes in the law regarding internet history it's not just for people with questionable download habits.

I use PureVPN. Its like $45 a year.

I didn't pay much more than that for a lifetime sub.

With the Black Friday deals now is the time to grab a yearly sub if you're looking for a VPN. I won't link specifically but have a search. Make sure your chosen VPN doesn't log, offers good options and utilises perfect forward secrecy. Providers like AirVPN, VPN.ac and PrivateInternetAccess have decent reputations. Some will offer a choice of encryption (AES-128, AES-256, AES-GCM with EC, EC/XOR etc), and also protocols like OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSEC etc. A SOCKS5 proxy is also nice to have. Read around before you buy.

After looking around, I was thinking either nordvpn or purevpn, but heavily leaning towards purevpn for the split tunneling feature, but saw this

https://www.reddit.com/r/VPN/comments/52654i/security_flaw_in_purevpn_calling_all_purevpn_users & http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2518138, which seems to be the same thing.

Purevpn don't seem to think it's a problem and the other link pretty much says windows/windows firewall can/will reject incoming, much the same as the basic firewall in most home routers. I did have another link, but lost it. Seems to be quite a few purevpn users & I would have thought if it was a major issue, there would not that many recomendations.

So hoping for some thoughts on the above from people with more experiance in that area.

It's so hard to decide :(. For every provider, there seems to X people saying it's great, and the same amount saying it's awful :p.

Thanks.

I'm getting rubbish download speeds with PureVPN. In the last few hours the most I've managed is 22mb download. I'm on a 200mb connection!

Any ideas why it's so slow?

They suggest different servers for different uses, have a look into which server you're suing and try a different one. Also it depends on what the device running it is, for example OpenVPN isn't multi-threaded from memory, I forget it's limit speed wise, but it was lower than 200mbit, also don't forget the 'up to' proviso from VM may mean you don't get 200mbit.
