Best way of getting around london ?

im taking the mrs for a weekend away in february

im booking a hotel and theatre tickets, and plan on doing a bit of walking around and sight seeing etc..

whats the best way to pay for underground / bus fares etc.. ?

ive done some reading and it seems to be the Oyster cards, but i wanted to check you can buy them there and then, you dont have to send off for one or whatever

and crucially, are there any better ways ?
 
oyster 3 day travelcard. pop into an underground station and get one for £3 there and then (after filling out a form) well worth the money, pays for itself
 
I'd just buy a travelcard every day, around £6 for off-peak (after 09:30) iirc and you can use it on all trains/busses/trams/tubes etc.

You can't use an Oyster card on trains unless you buy a travelcard on it.

we're only there saturday lunch to sunday lunch

how much for a ticket for unlimited transport on tube / bus on weekends ?
 
Was going to say by push bike (a la Top Gear) but I see it is for a break with the missis.

When me and Mrs LordSplodge go to the Big Smoke we just get a day pass for zones 1 & 2 from a machine...
 
Yep, just buy a zone 1/2 travelcard each. Allows unlimited bus and tube travel and is quite cheap at weekends.
 
If you're going for the whole weekend get a weekend travelcard, otherwise get a day travel card. If you have a young person's railcard then it's worth getting an oyster card and getting the limit set with the young person's card (reduces daily limit to just over £3 < £4.50).

Well, once you've been stuck in a tunnel at rush hour, almost crushed to death in a packed carriage on the central line in mid summer, you'll understand the criticism :)

tbh most of the time (e.g. weekends, weekdays during the day) it's absolutely fine and a really good way to get around. I'm just a bitter commuter.
 
there are these things that hang just below you waist, on either side of you man parts, to the best of my knowledge they are free to use, and travel all routes. :)

I've been to London a few times and always thought the tube was fantastic. Until I went on it during rush hour. Never EVER again! And to think people do that twice every day!
 
If you're going as a tourist then I really recommend taking the bus rather than the tube. The tube is quicker and easier to navigate round but all you'll see is the tunnel walls, on the bus you'll see some really quite interesting sights that aren't the usual tourist destinations.

i'd go for this (i own one even though i don't live in London). really useful, no messing with tickets or zones or anything, and you can use it on buses.

Tube for the win.

I use it all the time - although it can be a bit manky in mid summer... which is why you stand at the front of the carriage next to the open window (even when there are seats ;))
